PRIOR FEDERAL OFFENDER PLEADS GUILTY TO OBSCENITY OFFENSE FOLLOWING PREVIOUS CHILD PORNOGRAPHY CONVICTION

BUFFALO, N.Y. — A western New York man previously convicted in federal court on child pornography offenses has pleaded guilty to possessing obscene visual depictions following a prior qualifying conviction, federal prosecutors announced.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of New York, Raymond Mason, 54, of Frewsburg, New York, entered a guilty plea before U.S. District Judge Richard J. Arcara to possession of obscene visual depictions following a prior conviction. Under federal law, the offense carries a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years in prison, a maximum sentence of 20 years, and a potential fine of up to $250,000.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Franz M. Wright, who is prosecuting the case, stated that Mason was previously convicted in February 2010 of possession of child pornography and attempted receipt of child pornography. As a result of those convictions, he was sentenced to serve 144 months in federal prison followed by a lifetime term of supervised release.

Federal prosecutors stated that on July 15, 2024, United States Probation Officers conducted a scheduled home visit at Mason’s residence in Frewsburg as part of his supervised release. During the visit, officers located an internet-capable cellular phone and tablet that Mason was not authorized to possess under the conditions of his supervision.

According to court records, a preliminary examination of the cellular phone revealed visual depictions of minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct. Investigators subsequently conducted a forensic examination of the device, which prosecutors said uncovered more than 600 images, including computer-generated obscene images depicting minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct.

Prosecutors stated Mason obtained the computer-generated images over the internet. Court documents further indicate that some of the recovered images depicted prepubescent minors and included portrayals involving violence or the sexual exploitation of infants or toddlers.

The charge to which Mason pleaded guilty stems from federal laws that criminalize the possession of obscene visual depictions involving minors when an individual has a prior qualifying conviction. Prosecutors stated Mason’s earlier federal convictions subjected him to enhanced statutory penalties under federal law.

The investigation was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation under the direction of Special Agent-in-Charge Allen D. Davis II. The case also involved the work of United States Probation Officers responsible for supervising Mason during his lifetime term of supervised release.

Mason is scheduled to be sentenced before Judge Arcara on October 9, 2026, when the court will determine his final sentence in accordance with federal law.
