A member of the Zuni Pueblo has been sentenced in federal court after admitting responsibility for the fatal shooting of another individual during a December 2024 incident on tribal land.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of New Mexico, Glendon Laate, 49, was sentenced to 78 months in federal prison after pleading guilty to voluntary manslaughter. Federal officials noted that there is no parole in the federal prison system.
Court documents state that on December 1, 2024, Laate shot and killed John Doe with a homemade shotgun during what prosecutors described as a killing committed in the heat of passion. The case proceeded under a voluntary manslaughter charge rather than murder based on the facts established during the federal prosecution.
Following completion of his prison sentence, Laate will serve three years of supervised release, during which he must comply with conditions established by the federal court.
The investigation was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Gallup Resident Agency, part of the FBI Albuquerque Field Office, with assistance from the Zuni Police Department. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Jack Burkhead.
Federal authorities announced the sentencing through First Assistant U.S. Attorney Ryan Ellison and Justin A. Garris, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI Albuquerque Field Office.
The sentencing concludes the federal criminal proceedings in the case and reflects the penalties imposed following Laate’s guilty plea to voluntary manslaughter.

“Following completion of his prison sentence, Laate will serve three years of supervised release, during which he must comply with conditions established by the federal court.”
This seems more than fair because of the other facts of the sentence. Once out, I hope for him and for all around him that he doesn’t “snap” like this again causing injury or death to anyone else. Thank you for sharing the names of those who assisted with bringing this case to a conclusion.
Thank you for today’s articles, John. I hope you have a great night.
You’re very welcome, Chris.
One thing that stood out to me about this case is that moments of uncontrolled anger can permanently change multiple lives in just a matter of seconds. No matter what circumstances lead up to an event like this, the consequences often extend far beyond those directly involved and continue affecting families and communities for years afterward.
I’m also glad you mentioned the agencies involved. It takes a tremendous amount of work behind the scenes to investigate cases like this, gather the evidence, and see them through the judicial process. Every person involved plays an important role in bringing a case to its conclusion.
Thank you for reading today’s articles and for taking the time to comment, Chris. I hope you have a great night as well and a great day ahead. 😎
You’re welcome, John, and thank you for this thoughtful reply. Your statement: “the consequences often extend far beyond those directly involved and continue affecting families and communities for years afterward” is something we rarely see much about in these cases. Indeed, it does matter and that should be a consideration in sentencing as well.
I hope you have a great day as well, John!😊
