ANCHORAGE, Alaska — September 17, 2026 — FBI Anchorage Special Agent in Charge Matthew Schlegel says organizational reforms implemented across the FBI during the past 18 months are producing measurable operational changes in Alaska, including additional personnel, faster decision-making, expanded use of artificial intelligence, and greater field-level authority to address violent crime and national security threats.
Schlegel outlined the changes in an opinion piece published September 17 and posted by the FBI Anchorage Field Office. The office serves the entire state of Alaska, where geographic remoteness, different time zones, and other unique public-safety challenges create operational demands not faced by many other FBI field offices.
According to Schlegel, restructuring within FBI Headquarters has shifted greater responsibility and decision-making authority toward field leadership. He said the change has improved the Anchorage office’s ability to respond to bomb threats, counterterrorism matters, violent crime, crimes against children, cyber intrusions, and other investigations requiring rapid coordination.
The Anchorage Field Office has also received additional personnel, including special agents and intelligence analysts assigned to public safety and national security missions. Schlegel said those positions previously would have remained at FBI Headquarters but are now operating directly within Alaska, placing investigative and analytical resources closer to the communities and agencies they support.
Schlegel also pointed to the FBI’s expanded use of artificial intelligence as part of the agency’s modernization effort. One application involves the National Threat Operations Center, or NTOC, which receives tips from across the United States. According to the FBI, the system can receive thousands of tips in a single day.
AI is now being used to assist with triage, helping identify reports that may require urgent attention so they can be routed to appropriate field offices. Schlegel said some threats that previously could have taken days to reach investigators can now be forwarded within hours or minutes. The technology is being used to assist with initial sorting and prioritization before urgent threats are sent to the field for action.
The reforms are also tied to the FBI’s broader violent-crime strategy. Schlegel cited Operation Summer Heat, an enforcement initiative built around increased federal resources and coordination with law enforcement partners. The effort has included executing federal warrants involving violent criminals and fugitives, dismantling violent gangs, and seizing dangerous drugs before distribution in communities.
The FBI’s national crime statistics provide additional context for the Bureau’s public safety claims. According to data reported to the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting Program, violent crime declined 9.3% nationally from 2024 to 2025. The FBI said that represented the largest drop in violent crime since federal estimations began in 1936.
Murder declined 18.1%, robbery fell 18.5%, and property crime dropped 12.4% nationally.
For Alaska specifically, Schlegel reported an 11.8% decrease in murder and a 4.5% decline in rape between 2024 and 2025. He cited those figures as part of the broader national reduction in violent crime and argued that the FBI’s reforms have contributed to stronger public safety outcomes.
The crime figures establish that reported violent crime fell substantially during the period in question. They do not, by themselves, determine how much of that decline resulted from any single FBI policy, staffing decision, enforcement initiative, state or local strategy, demographic change, prosecution effort, or other factor. Schlegel’s position is that the Bureau’s restructuring and operational changes played a role in the improvement.
For Alaska, the changes described by Schlegel point toward a model centered on placing more personnel and decision-making authority in the field while using technology to accelerate the movement of intelligence and threat information. The effectiveness of that model will ultimately be measured not only by national statistics, but by whether agents and their law enforcement partners can identify threats faster, reach vulnerable communities sooner, dismantle violent criminal networks, protect children, disrupt cyber threats, and sustain reductions in serious crime.
Schlegel said the FBI still has work ahead despite the improvements recorded during the past 18 months. His central argument is that the agency’s restructuring is giving FBI Anchorage more of the personnel, authority, technology, and operational flexibility needed to protect a state where geography alone can turn an ordinary response into a significant logistical challenge.
For FBI Anchorage, the reforms are no longer confined to changes taking place at headquarters. They are reaching the field, adding agents and analysts, changing how threats are prioritized, and altering how quickly federal resources can be directed toward communities across Alaska.
