SUSPECTED BUFFALO GANG MEMBER CHARGED WITH ILLEGAL POSSESSION OF MACHINEGUN

BUFFALO, N.Y. — A Buffalo man identified by federal investigators as a suspected member of a violent street gang has been arrested and charged with illegally possessing a machinegun following the execution of a search warrant by federal and local law enforcement.

According to federal authorities, Lorenzo Harris, 20, of Buffalo, has been charged by criminal complaint with illegal possession of a machinegun, a federal offense carrying a maximum penalty of 10 years in federal prison if convicted.

The charge stems from an ongoing investigation conducted by the FBI Safe Streets Task Force and the Buffalo Police Department Gang Intelligence Unit, which have been investigating the criminal activities of the Newburg 118 Drop Boys Gang since 2024.

Federal investigators describe the Newburg 118 Drop Boys as a violent street gang operating in and around the City of Buffalo. Authorities say investigators have identified numerous suspected gang members and documented territory controlled by the organization on Buffalo’s east side.

According to investigators, members of the gang have previously been arrested by multiple law enforcement agencies for violent criminal activity, including drug trafficking and firearms trafficking. Federal authorities further allege that gang members commit violent acts to maintain control over gang-controlled neighborhoods and associated properties.

Investigators have identified Harris as a suspected gang member allegedly involved in firearm trafficking as part of the ongoing investigation.

According to the criminal complaint, law enforcement officers executed a federal search warrant on July 9, 2026, at an apartment located at 80 Silo City Row in Buffalo.

During the execution of the warrant, investigators allege Harris was observed holding a firearm and attempted to flee from officers before being taken into custody.

Authorities seized the firearm, which investigators say had been equipped with a machinegun conversion device. Such conversion devices, commonly referred to as auto sears or switches, can unlawfully convert certain semi-automatic firearms into fully automatic weapons capable of firing multiple rounds with a single pull of the trigger. Under federal law, these conversion devices are themselves classified as machineguns.

Harris made his initial appearance before U.S. Magistrate Judge Michael J. Roemer and was ordered detained pending a detention hearing scheduled for July 20, 2026.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney P. Richard Antoine.

The investigation is being conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, under the direction of Special Agent in Charge Allen D. Davis II, and the Buffalo Police Department, under the direction of Commissioner Erika Shield.

The criminal complaint contains allegations only. Lorenzo Harris is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
