CASAMERO LAKE WOMAN SENTENCED TO 37 MONTHS IN PRISON FOR FATAL HIT-AND-RUN

A Casamero Lake woman has been sentenced to 37 months in federal prison after pleading guilty to involuntary manslaughter in connection with a fatal hit-and-run that claimed the life of a pedestrian in northwestern New Mexico.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of New Mexico, Debbie Rojack, 46, an enrolled member of the Navajo Nation, struck and killed a pedestrian identified in court documents as John Doe while driving on a dirt road in the Borrego Pass area on or about August 6, 2024.

Investigators said the victim had last been seen leaving work on August 5, 2024, and his body was discovered four days later. An autopsy determined he died from catastrophic blunt-force injuries consistent with being struck by a vehicle, including multiple fractures and a severed spinal cord.

The investigation began after authorities recovered vehicle debris near the victim’s body. Forensic analysis traced the debris to a gray 2018–2022 Ford SUV, ultimately leading investigators to a gray 2019 Ford SUV owned by Rojack. Officials reported the vehicle had significant damage to the driver’s side, including deployed airbags. A federal search warrant executed on the SUV recovered additional evidence linking the vehicle to the fatal collision.

Federal investigators interviewed Rojack on October 4, 2024. According to court records, she stated she had been driving home from Crownpoint to Casamero Lake late at night when she struck what she believed was a deer. She told investigators she did not stop because she was alone and it was late.

Rojack admitted she had consumed a six-pack of Bud Light before driving and described her level of intoxication as approximately a “5 out of 10.” She later learned that a person had been found dead in the same area where the collision occurred and acknowledged she was concerned that she may have struck a person rather than an animal. She also confirmed she was the only occupant of the vehicle at the time of the crash.

Rojack subsequently pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter.

Rojack was sentenced to 37 months in federal prison. Following her release, she will serve two years of supervised release.

Acting U.S. Attorney Ryan Ellison and Justin A. Garris, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI’s Albuquerque Field Office, announced the sentence.

The case was investigated by the FBI Gallup Resident Agency with assistance from the Navajo Police Department, the Navajo Department of Criminal Investigations, and the New Mexico State Police. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Brittany DuChaussee and Jack Burke prosecuted the case.
