ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — A Shiprock man has been sentenced to 25 years in federal prison after admitting that he sexually abused a minor during a pattern of conduct that continued for four years.
Brian Begay, 31, an enrolled member of the Navajo Nation, pleaded guilty to sexual abuse of a minor and abusive sexual contact. His guilty plea and sentence are established court outcomes, not allegations.
According to court documents, Begay sexually abused the victim, identified as Jane Doe, between 2015 and 2019. The abuse began when she was 12 years old and continued until she was 16.
Court records state that Begay groomed Jane Doe, threatened harm against her and members of her family, and used force against her during the abuse. The conduct represented a sustained pattern directed at a child across several formative years of her life rather than an isolated offense.
Begay will serve 25 years in federal prison. Parole is not available in the federal system. Following his release from prison, Begay will remain under federal supervision for ten years. Begay must also register as a sex offender.
First Assistant U.S. Attorney Ryan Ellison and FBI Albuquerque Field Office Special Agent in Charge Justin A. Garris announced the sentence.
The Farmington Resident Agency of the FBI Albuquerque Field Office investigated the case with assistance from the Navajo Nation Police Department and the Navajo Department of Criminal Investigations.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Jesse Pecoraro prosecuted the case as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide Department of Justice initiative established in May 2006 to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse.
Project Safe Childhood coordinates federal, state, and local resources to locate, apprehend and prosecute individuals who exploit children through the internet and to identify and rescue victims.
