Previously Convicted Kansas Sex Offender Sentenced to 15 Years for Distributing Child Sexual Abuse Material

KANSAS CITY, Kansas — August 12, 2026 — David Mark Jones, a previously convicted sex offender from Shawnee, Kansas, has been sentenced to 180 months in federal prison for distributing and possessing child sexual abuse material.

Jones, 35, pleaded guilty to three counts of distribution of child pornography and one count of possession of child pornography. His 180-month federal sentence is equivalent to 15 years in prison.

Court documents established that Jones distributed child sexual abuse material between February and March 2024. The material included images depicting prepubescent children younger than 12.

The federal offenses occurred after Jones had already been convicted of sexual exploitation of a child in Johnson County District Court in February 2023. That conviction resulted in lifetime post-release supervision and lifetime registration as a sex offender.

Jones was therefore subject to continued monitoring and registration requirements when he committed the federal distribution and possession offenses. His prior conviction and supervision status made the discovery of the additional criminal activity a central part of the case.

“This case is an example of why the sex offender registry is so needed,” U.S. Attorney Ryan A. Kriegshauser said. “Because there are people monitoring sex offenders and checking to see that they are compliant with the rules once they are released, Mr. Jones’ crimes were detected, and now Mr. Jones is going back to prison.”

Distribution charges address the transfer or transmission of child sexual abuse material to another person or account. The separate possession charge concerns material found under the defendant’s control. Jones admitted responsibility for all four federal counts through his guilty plea.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation and Kansas Highway Patrol investigated the case. Assistant U.S. Attorney Audrey McCormick prosecuted it.

The prosecution was brought under Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 to coordinate federal, state and local resources against child sexual exploitation and abuse.

Project Safe Childhood supports efforts to identify offenders using the internet to exploit children, locate and apprehend those responsible, prosecute applicable offenses and identify victims who may require protection or assistance. The initiative is led by U.S. Attorneys’ Offices and the Justice Department’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section.
