TOPEKA, Kansas — August 6, 2026 — Michael Steven Podrybau of Alton, Kansas, has pleaded guilty in federal court to distributing obscene computer-generated images depicting minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct.
Podrybau, 43, pleaded guilty to one count of distributing an obscene visual representation of the sexual abuse of children.
According to court documents, Podrybau used the online communications platform Wickr Pro to distribute the material between March and April 2023. The images were computer-generated, classified as obscene and depicted minors participating in sexually explicit conduct.
The case addresses synthetic sexual-abuse imagery created through artificial intelligence or other computer-generation methods. Podrybau’s conviction is based on the distribution of obscene visual representations depicting the sexual abuse of children, rather than a finding that the images documented the abuse of identified children.
AI-generated sexual imagery can be produced without a conventional camera or an original photograph depicting the represented act. Its synthetic origin did not prevent federal prosecution under the offense to which Podrybau pleaded guilty.
The use of an online communications platform allowed the computer-generated material to be transmitted electronically. The charge establishes that Podrybau distributed the images rather than limiting the conduct to their creation or possession.
Podrybau is scheduled to be sentenced on November 17, 2026. A federal district court judge will determine the sentence after reviewing the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines, applicable statutory requirements and other factors presented to the court.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation is handling the case. Assistant U.S. Attorney Sara Walton is prosecuting it.
The prosecution was brought through Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 to coordinate federal, state and local resources against child sexual exploitation and abuse.
Project Safe Childhood supports efforts to identify and prosecute individuals who use internet services and digital communications to distribute exploitative material. The initiative is led by U.S. Attorneys’ Offices and the Justice Department’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section.
