CHEYENNE, Wyo. — Federal and local authorities have established a strict no-drone zone surrounding Cheyenne Frontier Days, warning that unauthorized operators could face aircraft confiscation, civil fines reaching $75,000 per violation, criminal fines, and federal imprisonment.
The flight restrictions apply throughout the 10-day event, which runs from July 17 through July 26. The FBI, Federal Aviation Administration, Federal Air Marshal Service, Cheyenne Police Department, and Cheyenne Frontier Days are coordinating enforcement and public-safety operations.
Cheyenne Frontier Days takes place within sensitive airspace bordered by a military installation and an airport. The event grounds are located in a section of airport airspace used by aircraft during takeoffs and landings, creating serious collision and security risks if unauthorized drones enter the area.
The FAA established a Temporary Flight Restriction under federal regulation 99.7 specifically addressing unmanned aircraft systems. The restriction prohibits unauthorized drone operations within a two-nautical-mile radius of the designated area and at altitudes extending to 400 feet.
The restriction applies regardless of whether a drone is being operated recreationally or commercially. Drone pilots are responsible for checking the airspace before launching an aircraft and cannot rely solely on previous knowledge of local flight conditions because temporary restrictions can alter where drone operations are legally permitted.
Federal officials warned that operating a drone within the restricted airspace is both dangerous and illegal. Any operator identified as violating federal aviation regulations can be referred to the FAA for investigation and enforcement.
Unauthorized operators could face confiscation of their drones, revocation of pilot certificates, and civil penalties of up to $75,000 for each violation. Law-enforcement agencies can also pursue applicable criminal penalties, including fines of up to $100,000 and as much as one year in federal prison.
The FAA has strengthened its enforcement priorities involving drones that endanger the public, enter restricted airspace, or are used to facilitate criminal activity. Conduct falling within those categories can trigger mandatory enforcement action.
Drone operators are advised to check for active restrictions through an FAA-approved B4UFLY service provider before every flight. These services provide free, near-real-time information concerning Temporary Flight Restrictions and other controlled or restricted airspace.
Most drones operating within the United States are also required to broadcast Remote ID information. Remote ID functions as a digital identification signal that provides information about a drone and its control location to authorized parties.
Disabling Remote ID or operating without complying with applicable identification requirements constitutes a separate federal violation and can result in additional penalties. Authorities emphasized that failing to broadcast Remote ID does not prevent detection because federal and local personnel can use multiple systems to locate unauthorized drones.
The FBI, FAA, and Federal Air Marshal Service are working with state and local partners to enforce the Temporary Flight Restriction. Authorized counter-drone technology can be used under the SAFER SKIES Act to detect and stop unauthorized aircraft that enter protected airspace.
Trained personnel have been positioned at event venues, with the Cheyenne Police Department and other local partners supporting the coordinated security operation.
Members of the public who observe unsafe or unauthorized drone activity should immediately contact 911, notify law-enforcement personnel at the event, call the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI (1-800-225-5324), or submit information through tips.fbi.gov.
The agencies stated that the restrictions are intended to protect event participants, employees, spectators, aviation operations, and the surrounding community throughout Cheyenne Frontier Days.
FBI Denver Public Affairs Specialist Vikki Migoya issued the information concerning the coordinated federal and local enforcement effort. Operators can review the applicable FAA flight restriction through the official Temporary Flight Restrictions system.
