MARYLAND MAN SENTENCED TO 10 YEARS IN FEDERAL PRISON FOR ARMED CONVENIENCE STORE ROBBERY

GREENBELT, Md. — A Maryland man has been sentenced to 10 years in federal prison for participating in the armed robbery of a Prince George’s County convenience store while he was already serving a term of federal supervised release.

Zebedee Alexander Johnson, 36, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Theodore Chuang to 10 years in federal prison, followed by five years of supervised release.

According to Johnson’s guilty plea, the robbery occurred on April 29, 2022, when Johnson and four other individuals traveled to a convenience store in Clinton, Maryland.

During the robbery, members of the group pointed a firearm at a store employee and ordered him to lie on the floor.

The group then used a circular saw to force open the store’s ATM and removed trays containing approximately $35,020.

The offense involved both a firearm and the forcible removal of cash from the ATM, making the robbery a significant violent-crime prosecution in Prince George’s County.

At the time of the robbery, Johnson was already on federal supervised release stemming from a 2018 drug-distribution conviction.

As part of his plea, Johnson admitted that committing the armed robbery violated the conditions of that supervised release, which prohibited him from committing additional crimes.

That prior federal status added another layer to the case because Johnson was under court supervision when the new offense occurred.

U.S. Attorney Kelly O. Hayes for the District of Maryland announced the sentence with Jimmy Paul, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI Baltimore Field Office, and George Nader, Chief of the Prince George’s County Police Department.

The FBI and Prince George’s County Police Department investigated the case.

Assistant U.S. Attorneys Joshua Rosenthal and William Moomau prosecuted the matter.

The case was handled in connection with Project Safe Neighborhoods, the Department of Justice initiative that coordinates federal, state, local, and tribal law-enforcement agencies and prosecutors in violent-crime investigations.

Project Safe Neighborhoods is coordinated through U.S. Attorneys’ Offices in all 94 federal judicial districts and is designed to focus enforcement resources on violent offenders and other serious public-safety threats.

The initiative also operates as a key component of Operation Take Back America.

Johnson’s case reflects the type of prosecution Project Safe Neighborhoods is designed to support: a violent offense involving a firearm, coordinated law-enforcement response, and a defendant who was already under federal supervision at the time of the crime.
