CALIFORNIA MAN PLEADS GUILTY TO 2024 SANTA MARIA COURTHOUSE BOMBING TARGETING LAW ENFORCEMENT AND A JUDGE

SANTA MARIA, CALIFORNIA — Nathaniel James McGuire, 22, of Santa Maria, has pleaded guilty to federal charges stemming from the September 2024 bombing of the Santa Maria courthouse, an attack prosecutors said was carried out with the intent to kill sheriff’s deputies and retaliate against law enforcement for the earlier seizure of his firearms.

McGuire pleaded guilty to one count of use of a weapon of mass destruction and one count of malicious destruction of a building using an explosive.

He has remained in federal custody since September 2024 and is scheduled to be sentenced on March 1, 2027. He faces a maximum sentence of life in federal prison.

According to his plea agreement, McGuire entered the Santa Maria courthouse on September 24, 2024, carrying a backpack containing an explosive device.

The courthouse serves the Santa Barbara County Superior Court.

McGuire admitted that he threw the backpack past the courthouse security screening area in the direction of Santa Barbara County sheriff’s deputies.

The device slid between the legs of one victim before detonating in the building outside a courtroom.

Five people were transported to hospitals and released the same day. Three victims suffered personal injuries as a direct result of the explosion.

McGuire admitted that his intent was to kill the sheriff’s deputies.

The attack did not end with the explosion.

According to the plea agreement, McGuire left the courthouse after the bomb detonated and returned to his vehicle, where he had two long guns and 10 Molotov cocktails.

He intended to retrieve the weapons, re-enter the courthouse, kill sheriff’s deputies, and kill a judge.

A courthouse security guard and multiple law enforcement officers stopped McGuire at his vehicle before he was able to return to the building.

The intervention prevented the attack from escalating into a second phase involving firearms and incendiary devices.

McGuire admitted that he intended to harm the judge and sheriff’s deputies because of their positions as government officials and employees.

He also admitted that the courthouse bombing was carried out in retaliation for what he viewed as government wrongdoing, including the seizure of his firearms by Santa Barbara County sheriff’s deputies earlier in 2024.

The blast caused approximately $35,000 in damage to the courthouse and forced the building to close for several days.

Assistant Attorney General for National Security John A. Eisenberg described the attack as a deliberate assault on the justice system.

“McGuire launched a vicious, terroristic assault on a court of law with the intent to kill law enforcement officers and a judge,” Eisenberg said.

He also credited courthouse security and responding officers with preventing the attack from becoming substantially more deadly.

First Assistant U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli for the Central District of California said the bombing caused physical, structural, and emotional damage and carried the potential for far greater loss of life.

McGuire had already detonated the bomb before attempting to return to his vehicle for additional weapons. According to his plea agreement, he intended to retrieve the two long guns and 10 Molotov cocktails and return to the courthouse to continue the attack.

That sequence is significant because the bombing was not an isolated act carried out without further preparation. McGuire admitted that he intended to continue the attack after the initial explosion.

A search of McGuire’s residence later led investigators to additional materials connected to bomb making.

McGuire’s guilty plea means the underlying conduct described in his plea agreement is no longer being presented solely as an allegation. He has admitted detonating the device, targeting law enforcement officers, damaging the courthouse, and planning to return with additional weapons to continue the attack.

The investigation is being conducted by the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force, the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office, and the Santa Maria Police Department.

Assistant U.S. Attorneys Mark P. Takla and Kathrynne N. Seiden for the Central District of California are prosecuting the case.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Alexander Su for the Central District of California provided substantial assistance, along with Trial Attorney Patrick Cashman of the Counterterrorism Section of the Department of Justice’s National Security Division.

The case now moves to sentencing, where a federal judge will determine McGuire’s punishment.

With a maximum possible sentence of life imprisonment, the March 2027 sentencing will determine the punishment imposed by the federal court for an attack that began with a bomb thrown inside a courthouse and, according to McGuire’s own admissions, was intended to continue with firearms and Molotov cocktails against sheriff’s deputies and a judge.
