FBI DENVER HONORS REALITIES FOR CHILDREN LEADER WITH DIRECTOR’S COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP AWARD

DENVER, Colo. — FBI Denver has recognized Craig Secher, executive director of Realities for Children, with the FBI Director’s Community Leadership Award for his work supporting abused, neglected, and at-risk children across Northern Colorado and for his organization’s partnership with federal investigators addressing child exploitation and abuse.

FBI Denver Special Agent in Charge Amanda Koldjeski announced Secher as a recipient of the award on September 21, 2026. The bureau cited his work as a community liaison and his continuing efforts to expand awareness and reporting involving child exploitation, abuse, and trafficking.

Realities for Children provides emergency and ongoing assistance to children in Northern Colorado who have experienced abuse, neglect, or other serious risks. FBI Denver said Secher and the organization support thousands of children each year.

Secher’s position at Realities for Children allows him to occasionally assist FBI Denver in specific child exploitation and abuse cases when victim-support needs arise.

According to the bureau, Realities for Children maintains an emergency fund that victim specialists can use to support children in Larimer and Weld counties who are victims of crime. That assistance can include food, transportation, temporary hotel accommodations, clothing, gasoline, gift cards, and other immediate necessities.

Those forms of support can become important during an investigation when a child victim needs transportation, temporary lodging, clothing, food, or other basic resources while victim specialists address immediate needs.

FBI Denver said Secher has also worked with the bureau to increase community understanding of child exploitation, abuse, and trafficking and to encourage greater reporting of suspected crimes.

Koldjeski said crimes against children remain a major investigative priority for the FBI and emphasized that education is also part of that mission. She credited Secher with helping FBI Denver reach those goals throughout Northern Colorado.

The bureau also emphasized the importance of community partnerships in cases involving vulnerable children.

Federal investigators can conduct criminal investigations, gather evidence, identify offenders, and work with prosecutors, but victim recovery often requires resources outside traditional law-enforcement functions. Community organizations can help fill those gaps by providing immediate assistance to children and families while an investigation is underway.

That connection is part of what FBI Denver cited in recognizing Secher.

Secher said effective protection of vulnerable children requires cooperation among community organizations, business leaders, law enforcement, youth organizations, and government agencies. He described FBI Denver as a partner in developing education and prevention strategies and said the recognition reflected the work being done for children served by the organization.

Koldjeski recognized Secher during a ceremony at FBI Denver headquarters on September 21.

The FBI formally created the Director’s Community Leadership Award in 1990 to honor individuals and organizations for outstanding service to their local communities and enduring contributions to the advancement of justice.

For FBI Denver, the award also underscores a broader reality of crimes-against-children investigations: federal agents cannot address every consequence of victimization through enforcement alone.

Investigations can identify offenders and build criminal cases. Recovery frequently requires transportation, shelter, food, clothing, advocacy, education, and sustained community support.

The partnership between FBI Denver and Realities for Children is built around that division of responsibility, connecting criminal investigations with practical assistance for the children affected by them.
