HONOLULU — A 20-year-old Filipino national residing in Honolulu, Oahu, and Kahului, Maui, has pleaded guilty in federal court to unlawfully voting as an alien in the 2024 election.
Bernadette Acaso entered the guilty plea on September 18, 2026, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Hawaii. Federal prosecutors said Acaso was born in the Philippines, entered the United States in or around September 2018 on an immigrant visa, and later became a Lawful Permanent Resident.
According to the plea agreement, Acaso was not a U.S. citizen when she cast a mail-in ballot in the 2024 election. She admitted that she understood she was not a United States citizen and was therefore not eligible to vote in U.S. elections at the time she voted.
The guilty plea marks a significant change from the earlier stage of the case. Acaso was initially charged by criminal complaint in July 2026, when federal authorities accused her of unlawfully voting as an alien. At that stage, the charge remained an accusation. Her September guilty plea establishes that she admitted the conduct in federal court.
U.S. Attorney Ken Sorenson said federal election law restricts voting in federal elections to eligible U.S. citizens and said his office would continue enforcing laws intended to protect the integrity of the electoral process. FBI Honolulu Special Agent in Charge David Porter also said participation in federal elections is reserved for U.S. citizens and that the bureau remains focused on election-related violations. Homeland Security Investigations Honolulu Acting Special Agent in Charge CJ Ammons said HSI would continue working with federal partners on investigations involving election-law violations.
In a separate Hawaii federal case, prosecutors charged Remedios Alasaas, 66, of Kahului, Maui, with unlawfully voting as an alien in the 2022 general election and the 2024 primary election. That case remained at the charging stage in the Justice Department release and should not be confused with Acaso’s guilty plea.
Acaso faces a maximum penalty of one year in prison, a term of supervised release, and a fine of up to $100,000. The final sentence will be determined by the court.
The FBI and Homeland Security Investigations investigated the case. Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Heidi Turner is prosecuting it.
