ALBUQUERQUE — A 20-year-old Shiprock man has been charged in federal court after allegedly assaulting another person with a post hole digger, leaving the victim with multiple bruises and a large head laceration that required 11 stitches, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of New Mexico.
Tyron Begay, an enrolled member of the Navajo Nation, is charged with assault with a dangerous weapon in connection with the August 29, 2026, incident. Federal prosecutors said the alleged assault occurred after a day of consuming alcohol.
According to court documents cited by prosecutors, Begay allegedly used a post hole digger during the attack. The victim suffered multiple bruises and a substantial laceration to the head that required 11 stitches.
Begay remains in custody pending trial, which has not yet been scheduled. If convicted of the current charge, he faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in federal prison.
First Assistant U.S. Attorney Ryan Ellison and FBI Albuquerque Special Agent in Charge Justin A. Garris announced the charge. The FBI’s Farmington Resident Agency investigated the case with assistance from the Navajo Nation Police Department and Navajo Department of Criminal Investigations. Assistant U.S. Attorney Aaron O. Jordan is prosecuting the case.
The case also highlights the federal–tribal coordination behind the investigation. Begay is an enrolled member of the Navajo Nation, and federal investigators worked alongside Navajo law-enforcement authorities as the assault allegation moved into federal court.
Begay has been charged, not convicted. The criminal complaint remains an allegation, and he is presumed innocent unless and until the government proves the charge beyond a reasonable doubt in court.
