Three members of the Unknown Vice Lords, a Memphis-based street gang also known as the Ghost Mob, have been sentenced to a combined 507 months — more than 42 years — in federal prison for offenses tied to a retaliatory gang shooting and related firearms violations.
Antwon Brown, also known as Yayo, 33, of Memphis, was sentenced to 300 months, or 25 years, in prison for attempting to commit murder and discharging a firearm into an occupied residence.
Cordera Douglas, also known as Chuckie Dee, 37, of Memphis, received an 87-month sentence for conspiring to commit murder.
Willie Merriweather, also known as Willie, 42, of Antioch, Tennessee, was sentenced to 120 months, or 10 years, for conspiring to commit murder.
According to court records, Brown, Douglas and Merriweather were ranked members of the Unknown Vice Lords, an organization federal prosecutors described as a criminal enterprise operating across Memphis, Arkansas and Mississippi. Members of the gang committed murders, assaults and drug trafficking offenses in furtherance of the enterprise.
The federal case centered on a violent confrontation between rival gang members in September 2020.
Court documents allege that on Sept. 6, 2020, rival gang members opened fire on Unknown Vice Lords members and their families, injuring four people.
Merriweather, identified by prosecutors as a high-ranking UVL leader, ordered retaliation following the shooting. Douglas participated in a gang meeting where the retaliatory attack was planned.
Shortly after midnight on Sept. 7, 2020, Brown traveled to the residence of rival gang members while armed with assault-style rifles and wearing a mask and gloves.
According to court records, Brown fired approximately 40 to 50 rounds into the occupied residence.
Neighborhood security cameras recorded the attack. The video captured Brown carrying and firing multiple firearms into the home. The shooting placed the occupants of the residence at risk and brought gang violence into a residential neighborhood.
Assistant Attorney General A. Tysen Duva of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division said the defendants demonstrated a disregard for public safety by carrying out a gang shooting in a residential area. Duva said federal prosecutors will continue targeting criminal organizations responsible for violent offenses.
U.S. Attorney D. Michael Dunavant for the Western District of Tennessee said the prosecution reflects an effort to confront gang-related retaliation and violence in Memphis.
ATF Nashville Field Division Special Agent in Charge James VanVliet said retaliatory gang shootings place entire communities at risk and said ATF will continue working with local, state and federal partners to investigate violent offenders.
Two additional defendants remain involved in the case. Ricky Rogers Jr., also known as Double R and RR, 32, of Memphis, is scheduled to be sentenced on Nov. 5.
Tevin Richardson, also known as Santana, 34, of Memphis, is scheduled for trial on April 4, 2027. The charges against Richardson remain pending, and he has not been convicted based on the information provided.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Memphis Police Department investigated the case.
Trial Attorneys Lisa M. Thelwell and Dennis Robinson of the Justice Department Criminal Division’s Violent Crime and Racketeering Section are prosecuting the case with substantial assistance from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Tennessee.
The prosecution is part of the Criminal Division’s Violent Crime Initiative targeting violent crime in Memphis and surrounding communities. The initiative combines federal prosecutorial resources with local, state and federal law-enforcement efforts to pursue gang members and associates accused or convicted of violent federal offenses.
