AUSTIN, Texas — A federal jury has convicted an Austin man of wire fraud and money laundering after finding that he obtained $1 million from an investor through false representations involving a project intended to benefit the University of Austin.
John Stuart Robison, 63, was found guilty on July 22, 2026, following a federal jury trial in the Western District of Texas.
United States Attorney Justin R. Simmons announced the convictions on July 23.
According to court documents and evidence presented at trial, Robison convinced an investor to transfer $1 million into a business bank account under his sole control.
Robison represented that the money would benefit the University of Austin. The funds were supposed to remain in an escrow account unless and until he raised an additional $1 million for the project.
As part of the scheme, Robison lied to the investor about land that he controlled or held under option. He also presented false option contracts involving property and claimed that all money already spent on the project had come from his personal accounts.
One day after the investor’s money was wired into the business account, Robison fraudulently transferred $250,000 into another bank account that he controlled. The transferred money was used for Robison’s benefit rather than the University of Austin.
Within several months of receiving the investment, Robison had spent essentially the entire $1 million.
Robison was indicted on November 18, 2025, and arrested on November 21.
Following his convictions, Robison faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in federal prison for the wire-fraud count and up to 10 years for the money-laundering charges.
The potential penalties do not represent a predetermined sentence. A federal district court judge will determine Robison’s punishment after considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation and Austin Police Department investigated the case.
Assistant U.S. Attorneys Dan Guess and Britni Verdeja prosecuted the case.
