PORTSMOUTH SEX OFFENDER SENTENCED TO NEARLY FIVE YEARS IN FEDERAL PRISON FOR ILLEGAL FIREARM POSSESSION

NORFOLK, Va. — A Portsmouth man with prior convictions, including aggravated sexual battery involving a six-year-old child, has been sentenced to four years and nine months in federal prison for illegally possessing a firearm.

Jamaro Lamont Fields, 37, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Mark S. Davis after being convicted of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

The federal firearms case developed from a broader law-enforcement investigation that included controlled purchases of cocaine and the recovery of fentanyl, cocaine, ammunition and drug-distribution materials.

According to federal court records, law enforcement conducted three controlled purchases of cocaine from Fields on April 23, 2025. Portsmouth Police later searched his residence as part of the investigation.

Detectives found ammunition inside the home along with scales, cutting agents and packaging materials commonly associated with the preparation and distribution of illegal drugs.

Authorities also recovered approximately 11 grams of fentanyl from Fields during the investigation.

A search of Fields’ vehicle produced additional evidence. Investigators recovered approximately 14 grams of fentanyl, 12 grams of cocaine and a handgun from the vehicle.

The discovery of the firearm resulted in serious federal consequences because Fields was legally prohibited from possessing firearms or ammunition as a convicted felon.

Fields’ criminal history includes a 2013 conviction for aggravated sexual battery involving a six-year-old victim. He was also convicted in 2024 of failing to register as a sex offender.

Federal law generally prohibits individuals convicted of qualifying felonies from possessing firearms or ammunition. The prohibition applies regardless of whether the firearm itself was used during the earlier felony offense.

In Fields’ case, investigators recovered both a handgun and ammunition during an investigation that also uncovered quantities of fentanyl and cocaine. The sentencing announced October 7 specifically concerned the federal felon-in-possession offense.

The underlying drug evidence adds important context to the investigation but should be distinguished from the offense for which Fields received the federal sentence. The Justice Department announcement identified his conviction as possession of a firearm by a convicted felon rather than announcing a separate federal drug sentence.

The case also demonstrates how local criminal investigations can produce federal firearms prosecutions when evidence reveals that a person prohibited from possessing weapons has obtained a gun or ammunition.

First Assistant U.S. Attorney Theophani K. Stamos for the Eastern District of Virginia and Anthony A. Spotswood, Special Agent in Charge of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives Washington Field Division, announced the sentence following the court proceeding.

Special Assistant U.S. Attorneys Hannah E. Wirt and Nikolas Nelson prosecuted the federal case.

Fields has now been sentenced to 57 months in federal prison. Because this is a sentencing following conviction, the firearm offense is no longer an allegation. The sentence reflects his unlawful possession of the firearm as a convicted felon. His prior aggravated sexual battery and sex-offender registration convictions were part of the criminal history identified by prosecutors in announcing the sentence.
