FORMER OAHU GIRLS’ WRESTLING COACH INDICTED ON 14 FEDERAL COUNTS INVOLVING CHILD SEXUAL EXPLOITATION AND TRAFFICKING

HONOLULU, HAWAII — A former girls’ wrestling coach at Moanalua High School is facing 14 federal criminal charges involving the alleged sexual exploitation of minors, including the production and distribution of child sexual abuse material and the sex trafficking of a second minor. Federal authorities have also expanded their efforts to identify potential victims who may have encountered the defendant over a period extending back to 2012.

Sean Sakaida, 44, of Honolulu, was indicted by a federal grand jury on October 15, 2026, according to U.S. Attorney Ken Sorenson of the District of Hawaii. The indictment contains four counts of production of child pornography, four counts of distribution, one count of receipt, four counts of possession, and one count of child sex trafficking.

Sakaida had already been taken into federal custody on September 24, following his arrest on an earlier criminal complaint charging receipt and possession of child pornography. The September 25 announcement marked the initial public disclosure of the federal case, while the October indictment introduced additional allegations involving the creation and distribution of abusive material and the alleged trafficking of another minor.

According to federal court records described by prosecutors, Sakaida communicated repeatedly with one minor through WhatsApp between 2025 and 2026. Investigators allege that he received multiple sexually explicit photographs of the minor during those communications. The indictment further accuses him of producing and distributing several videos depicting sexual activity involving himself and that minor.

The prosecution also alleges that Sakaida enticed a second minor into participating in a commercial sex act. That allegation forms the basis of the separate child sex trafficking charge and extends the prosecution beyond offenses involving child sexual abuse material.

The FBI’s Honolulu Field Office has issued a public appeal seeking information from potential victims and others familiar with Sakaida’s activities. In its victim-identification notice, the bureau states that he allegedly targeted female wrestlers who were minors during a period spanning 2012 through 2026. That investigative timeframe is substantially broader than the 2025–2026 communications described in the current federal charging announcement.

Federal authorities have asked people who believe they or their minor dependents were victimized, as well as those possessing relevant information, to contact the FBI through its official Sean Sakaida victim-information questionnaire. Individuals who know someone who may have been affected are encouraged to direct that person to the bureau’s reporting process.

The FBI questionnaire requests information about contact with Sakaida, when communications began, and the applications through which interactions occurred. In addition to WhatsApp, the form includes Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok, and email among the available communication methods. Their inclusion does not establish that criminal activity occurred through every listed service.

If convicted, Sakaida faces substantial federal penalties. Each of the four production counts carries a prison term of 15 to 30 years. The distribution counts and the receipt count each carry potential prison terms of five to 20 years, while each possession count carries a maximum term of 10 years.

The child sex trafficking charge carries a potential sentence of up to life imprisonment. Federal prosecutors also identified a possible fine of up to $250,000 and a period of supervised release. These are the penalties described in the Justice Department’s announcement, not a sentence already imposed. Any eventual punishment would be determined by a federal district judge under the applicable statutes, sentencing factors, and advisory federal sentencing guidelines.

The FBI is conducting the investigation, and Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Heidi Turner is prosecuting the case for the District of Hawaii.
