SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS — A Guatemalan national extradited to the United States has been sentenced to 30 years in federal prison for his involvement in a deadly human smuggling operation that left 53 migrants dead and 11 others injured inside a tractor-trailer discovered in San Antonio in June 2022. The sentencing marks another major development in the federal prosecution of an international smuggling network responsible for one of the deadliest migrant transportation tragedies in American history.
Rigoberto Ramon Miranda-Orozco received the sentence on October 20, 2026, after pleading guilty to federal offenses involving the transportation of migrants into the United States that resulted in deaths and serious bodily injuries. He had been arrested in Guatemala in August 2024 and extradited to the United States in March 2025 following a coordinated international investigation.
On June 27, 2022, authorities discovered a tractor-trailer in San Antonio containing 64 migrants who had been transported approximately 156 miles from Laredo, Texas, in extreme heat. The trailer lacked functioning air conditioning, leaving those confined inside exposed to dangerous conditions as outside temperatures reached approximately 90 degrees Fahrenheit.
The enclosed trailer became a deadly environment during the journey. Investigative evidence presented in the broader federal prosecution established that some passengers lost consciousness while others attempted to escape, clawing at the trailer’s interior as conditions deteriorated.
When emergency personnel arrived, 48 people were pronounced dead at the scene. Five additional victims later died at hospitals, bringing the total number of fatalities to 53. Eleven people survived, although the incident left several with severe injuries. Among those who died were six children and at least one pregnant woman.
The victims came from countries across Central America and Mexico. Federal prosecutors reported that 21 of those killed were Guatemalan nationals, underscoring the direct consequences of the smuggling network’s operations in Miranda-Orozco’s home country.
Two Guatemalan migrants whose journeys Miranda-Orozco helped arrange died inside the trailer. A third individual connected to his smuggling arrangements survived after sustaining serious bodily injuries that required an extended hospital stay.
Miranda-Orozco admitted that he arranged transportation and accommodations during different stages of the migrants’ journeys through Guatemala, Mexico, and the United States. His criminal responsibility extended beyond the final transportation segment in Texas, reflecting his participation in the international arrangements that delivered individuals into the deadly operation.
Miranda-Orozco’s arrest in August 2024 resulted from an international law enforcement effort involving U.S. authorities and Guatemala’s Attorney General’s Office. Guatemalan investigators executed multiple search and arrest warrants during a coordinated operation targeting individuals associated with the smuggling organization.
On July 2, 2026, Miranda-Orozco pleaded guilty to conspiracy to bring an alien into the United States resulting in death, aiding and abetting bringing an alien into the United States resulting in death, and aiding and abetting bringing an alien into the United States resulting in serious bodily injury.
The prosecution has also resulted in convictions involving other participants in the deadly transportation scheme. On March 18, 2025, a federal jury convicted Felipe Orduna-Torres, also known as Cholo, Chuequito, and Negro, and Armando Gonzalez-Ortega, also known as El Don and Don Gon.
Both men were convicted of conspiracy to transport migrants resulting in death, serious bodily injury, and endangerment of human life, along with substantive transportation offenses connected to the fatal operation.
Assistant Attorney General A. Tysen Duva of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division emphasized the responsibility of individuals who organize illegal transportation arrangements for financial gain despite the dangers facing migrants. U.S. Attorney Justin R. Simmons for the Western District of Texas also recognized the international cooperation necessary to locate, extradite, and prosecute Miranda-Orozco.
Homeland Security Investigations led the U.S. investigation through its San Antonio office, working with HSI personnel in Guatemala and the agency’s Human Smuggling Unit in Washington, D.C. Investigators also received assistance from U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s National Targeting Center and Operation Sentinel, U.S. Border Patrol, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and participating Texas law enforcement and emergency response agencies.
The San Antonio Police Department and San Antonio Fire Department were among the agencies involved in the investigation and response. The Palestine Police Department also provided assistance.
Federal prosecutors working on the case included Trial Attorney Alexandra Skinnion of the Criminal Division’s Human Rights and Special Prosecutions Section, First Assistant U.S. Attorney Eric Fuchs, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Jose Luis Acosta of the Western District of Texas. HRSP Historian and Latin America Specialist Joanna Crandall provided additional assistance.
According to the Justice Department’s October 20 announcement, Joint Task Force Alpha has contributed to more than 486 domestic and international arrests of significant human smuggling and trafficking participants, more than 447 U.S. convictions, and more than 374 substantial jail sentences, along with the forfeiture of criminal assets.
