ATF EXPANDS NATIONAL ARSON INVESTIGATION CAPABILITIES WITH EIGHT NEW ACCELERANT DETECTION K-9 TEAMS

FRONT ROYAL, VIRGINIA — The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) has expanded its nationwide arson investigation capabilities following the graduation of eight newly certified accelerant detection canine teams trained to identify substances that may indicate a fire was intentionally set.

The eight canine-handler teams completed their training on October 16, 2026, graduating as Accelerant Detection Class 159 from the ATF National Canine Academy. The graduates will serve with state and local law enforcement agencies across the United States, strengthening access to specialized detection capabilities during fire and arson investigations.

Each canine completed six weeks of odor recognition training designed to develop the ability to detect ignitable liquids associated with potentially deliberate fires. Their training also enables them to identify trace amounts of these substances on clothing, objects, and other materials that may have come into contact with accelerants.

Accelerant detection canines assist investigators by identifying locations and materials requiring closer forensic examination. Their ability to detect residual odors can be particularly valuable at fire scenes where extensive damage, suppression activities, and environmental conditions complicate the identification of potential evidence.

The dogs’ alerts help investigators determine where to collect samples for laboratory testing. A canine indication alone does not establish that arson occurred, since the presence of ignitable liquids must be evaluated alongside laboratory findings, fire patterns, witness information, and other investigative evidence.

Special Agent in Charge Brice McCracken of ATF’s National Center for Explosives Training and Research emphasized the importance of specialized canine teams in complex fire investigations. He explained that their detection capabilities provide investigators with valuable evidence that can assist in determining whether a fire was deliberately set and support subsequent criminal prosecutions.

The handlers also completed classroom instruction and scenario-based exercises addressing investigative procedures and operational conditions encountered during arson investigations. This combined training prepares the teams to work alongside fire investigators, forensic specialists, and law enforcement personnel while supporting evidence collection at potentially criminal fire scenes.

ATF’s National Canine Training Center provides specialized detection training for federal, state, and local agencies. Its programs also support organizations including the U.S. Marshals Service, Federal Emergency Management Agency, and National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency.

The bureau is the only Department of Justice agency responsible for training explosives and accelerant detection canine teams, with more than 200 dogs serving across its various programs. The National Canine Training Center operates as a component of the National Center for Explosives Training and Research, headquartered in Huntsville, Alabama.

The addition of Class 159 expands the availability of trained canine teams capable of assisting investigators with suspected arson incidents, identifying potential accelerant evidence, and supporting the forensic examination necessary to establish the cause and origin of fires.
