ERIE MAN FEDERALLY INDICTED ON CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE MATERIAL DISTRIBUTION AND POSSESSION CHARGES

ERIE, PENNSYLVANIA — A 37-year-old Erie man has been indicted by a federal grand jury on three charges involving the alleged distribution, attempted distribution, and possession of child sexual abuse material (CSAM). The indictment follows a joint investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the City of Erie Police Department into suspected violations of federal child sexual exploitation laws.

Michael Glenn Veenstra was named as the sole defendant in the three-count indictment, announced October 22, 2026, by U.S. Attorney Troy Rivetti for the Western District of Pennsylvania. Federal prosecutors allege that Veenstra distributed and attempted to distribute material depicting the sexual exploitation of a minor during January and February 2026.

The indictment further alleges that Veenstra possessed and accessed material depicting child sexual exploitation with the intent to view it during the same period. The charges address separate forms of prohibited conduct under federal law, including the distribution of exploitative material and the knowing possession or intentional viewing of such material.

Federal statutes establish substantial penalties for these offenses. A conviction on the distribution charge carries a mandatory minimum sentence of five years and a maximum of 20 years in prison, along with a potential fine of up to $250,000. The possession charge carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a possible fine of up to $250,000.

Any sentence would be determined through federal court proceedings, taking into account the applicable statutory requirements, federal sentencing guidelines, and the defendant’s criminal history, if any. The penalties represent potential sentencing consequences rather than punishment already imposed.

The case now proceeds through the federal judicial system in the Western District of Pennsylvania. Veenstra has been formally charged but has not been convicted of the alleged offenses. He remains presumed innocent unless and until the government proves his guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
