SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA — A coordinated law enforcement operation targeting drug and firearms trafficking through social media and other digital platforms has resulted in 146 arrests, the recovery of 43 firearms, and the seizure of narcotics valued at approximately $7.4 million across California. The operation involved 38 federal, state, and local agencies operating in 14 counties, with investigative assistance from Meta Platforms, which removed more than 800 accounts for violating its policies.
The results of Operation Central Valley Blues were announced on October 22, 2026, by the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office in partnership with the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of California, Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office, Sacramento Police Department, and Central Valley California High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA).
The operation expanded an earlier local enforcement strategy known as Folsom Blues into a broader regional initiative targeting individuals suspected of using online services to facilitate the sale of fentanyl, methamphetamine, firearms, and other illegal substances. Investigators concentrated on the final stage of distribution, where drugs and weapons reach individual buyers through dealers who may advertise, negotiate, or coordinate transactions using digital platforms.
Authorities combined undercover investigations, intelligence analysis, search warrants, targeted patrols, and probation and parole compliance operations to identify suspected traffickers and disrupt distribution activities. Federal and local prosecutors worked alongside investigators to obtain legal authorization for investigative measures and the collection of digital evidence.
The enforcement effort resulted in the seizure of approximately 3,286 pounds and 15.2 ounces of narcotics, along with 18,542 pills. Among the substances recovered were 3,184 pounds and 15.4 ounces of cannabis, 91 pounds and 13.1 ounces of methamphetamine, 7 pounds and 12.3 ounces of cocaine, and approximately 7.5 ounces of fentanyl. Authorities also reported recovering 16,136 fentanyl pills, together with quantities of heroin, psilocybin, and gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB).
Investigators additionally seized $338,222 in currency and recovered 43 firearms during the operation. The reported $7.4 million represents the estimated street value of the narcotics seized, rather than a confirmed amount of proceeds earned by the individuals arrested.
Meta played a significant role in the digital component of the investigation. According to Chris Sonderby, the company’s vice president, Meta removed more than 800 accounts for violating platform policies and provided information that assisted law enforcement in carrying out enforcement actions.
The company’s involvement included coordination with prosecutors and participating agencies through established legal processes governing investigative information. The removal of accounts represented platform enforcement measures and should not be interpreted as proof that every account holder committed a criminal offense.
A participating regional operation in Colusa County provides additional insight into how the broader initiative was conducted. Between October 5 and October 8, the Colusa County Task Force and cooperating agencies carried out continuous narcotics enforcement activities, including five residential search warrants executed within 36 hours.
The Colusa County effort also involved traffic enforcement along major transportation corridors, including Interstate 5 and Highway 20. Local authorities reported recovering firearms, narcotics-related evidence, and a stolen vehicle while making arrests associated with outstanding felony warrants and suspected criminal activity. These actions formed part of the wider Central Valley Blues operation rather than a separately established total to be added to its statewide results.
Sacramento County District Attorney Thien Ho identified the operation as an expansion of investigative methods developed through Folsom Blues, emphasizing the identification of individuals using online platforms to sell drugs and firearms. The involvement of Meta added a direct platform-level component to investigations traditionally conducted through surveillance, undercover transactions, and physical enforcement.
DEA San Francisco Field Division Special Agent in Charge Bob P. Beris described the operation as a coordinated Homeland Security Task Force effort bringing together investigative resources from federal, state, and local agencies. The task force designation provided a framework for cooperation against suspected criminal distribution networks operating across jurisdictional boundaries.
U.S. Attorney Eric Grant of the Eastern District of California also participated in announcing the results, emphasizing the coordination of federal and local prosecution strategies. Sacramento Interim Police Chief Zachary Bales identified the cross-jurisdictional nature of online drug and firearms trafficking as a principal concern for participating agencies.
Central Valley California HIDTA Executive Director John Martin recognized the initiative’s regional coordination. HIDTA partnerships support investigative cooperation among participating agencies working to identify narcotics trafficking organizations and related criminal activities.
The operation reflects the expanded role of digital evidence in drug trafficking investigations. Social media accounts, electronic communications, and online coordination can provide investigative leads that supplement physical surveillance, controlled operations, and financial evidence. Prosecutors must still establish the applicable elements of individual criminal offenses through admissible evidence.
Although authorities reported 146 arrests, the October 22 announcement did not provide a complete breakdown of individual criminal charges, convictions, or sentencing outcomes. Those arrested remain subject to their respective legal proceedings, and arrests alone do not establish criminal guilt.
Operation Central Valley Blues represents a coordinated enforcement effort connecting online investigative activity with physical drug and firearm seizures across 14 California counties. Its results demonstrate the scale of the participating agencies’ operations, while subsequent prosecutions will determine the criminal responsibility of individuals charged in connection with the investigation.
