CHARLESTON, WEST VIRGINIA — A 51-year-old Kanawha County man with five prior felony drug convictions has been sentenced to more than 15 years in federal prison for distributing fentanyl and possessing additional quantities of fentanyl and cocaine intended for distribution in the Charleston area. The sentencing follows a federal investigation that resulted in indictments against eight individuals connected to suspected narcotics trafficking activities.
Alphonzo Keith Baker, also known as “KD,” of St. Albans, received a sentence of 15 years and eight months in prison on October 21, 2026. U.S. District Judge Irene C. Berger also imposed four years of supervised release following his incarceration. The sentence covers three counts of distributing 40 grams or more of fentanyl and one count of possession with intent to distribute fentanyl and cocaine.
According to federal court records, Baker conducted three separate fentanyl sales in the Charleston area on October 6, November 4, and December 2, 2025. Each transaction involved at least 40 grams of fentanyl, establishing multiple distribution offenses over a two-month period. On December 4, 2025, Baker also possessed additional quantities of fentanyl and cocaine intended for distribution.
The quantities involved are significant under federal narcotics law. Distribution of 40 grams or more of a mixture or substance containing fentanyl falls within a specific federal penalty category under Title 21 of the United States Code. Federal sentencing determinations also consider criminal history, applicable statutory penalties, and other legally established circumstances.
Baker’s criminal record dates to 1995 and includes five previous felony convictions involving drug dealing. His repeated involvement in narcotics offenses formed part of the background presented in the federal proceedings, distinguishing this prosecution from a first-time drug conviction.
The broader investigation resulted in federal indictments against eight individuals suspected of participating in fentanyl trafficking in the Charleston area. Six defendants, including Baker, have entered guilty pleas, while criminal proceedings remain pending against the other two. The October 21 announcement did not establish convictions against those remaining defendants, who retain the presumption of innocence unless proven guilty.
The investigation involved the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Metropolitan Drug Enforcement Network Team (MDENT), a regional law enforcement partnership that coordinates drug investigations across Charleston and surrounding Kanawha County communities.
MDENT includes personnel from the Charleston Police Department, Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office, Putnam County Sheriff’s Office, Nitro Police Department, St. Albans Police Department, and South Charleston Police Department. The partnership combines local investigative resources with federal enforcement capabilities to investigate narcotics distribution and related criminal activity across jurisdictional boundaries.
U.S. Attorney Moore Capito announced the sentence and recognized the work of the participating investigative agencies. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jeremy B. Wolfe prosecuted the case in the Southern District of West Virginia.
The prosecution is part of a broader federal effort to address fentanyl distribution in southern West Virginia, where investigations frequently require cooperation among municipal police departments, county law enforcement agencies, and federal investigators.
Baker’s sentence establishes a substantial federal prison term for repeated fentanyl distribution and possession with intent to distribute controlled substances. Six of the eight defendants have pleaded guilty, while criminal proceedings remain pending against the other two.
