A Houston man has been sentenced to more than 13 years in federal prison for his role in two violent armed convenience store robberies in North Texas, concluding a federal case involving multiple felony convictions stemming from a coordinated robbery conspiracy.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Texas, Fredy Jose Barrera Borjas, 26, was sentenced to 162 months in federal prison by U.S. District Judge Amos L. Mazzant after pleading guilty to conspiracy to carry a firearm during a crime of violence, two counts of Hobbs Act robbery, aiding and abetting, and brandishing a firearm during a crime of violence.
Court records show the robberies occurred on March 4 and March 5, 2022, when Borjas conspired with others to rob the Buy Low Liquor Store in Lewisville and Zoom Zooms Convenience Store in Denton.
According to evidence presented during court proceedings, the group forcibly entered both businesses while armed with firearms and stole large amounts of cash from the store owners. During one of the robberies, Borjas and his accomplices ordered an employee to her knees at gunpoint while other members of the group entered the manager’s office, where the manager was robbed and severely beaten.
Federal prosecutors stated that the offenses involved the use of firearms to intimidate victims while carrying out the robberies. Crimes of this nature place employees, business owners, and customers at significant risk of serious injury or death and frequently result in substantial physical and psychological trauma for those involved.
Borjas was the final defendant sentenced in the case, bringing the federal prosecution of the robbery conspiracy to its conclusion.
The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the Denton Police Department, and the Lewisville Police Department. The prosecution was handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Chalana A. Oliver.
The sentencing was announced by U.S. Attorney Jay R. Combs for the Eastern District of Texas.

Thirteen years is a long time to spend behind bars but I think it is a fair sentence based on the crime. The unseen “results” of a crime like is has been described well in the article:
“Crimes of this nature…frequently result in substantial physical and psychological trauma for those involved.” That along with the possibility of real danger must be taken into consideration in cases like this.

I completely agree. While thirteen years is certainly a significant sentence, cases involving armed robberies are about much more than the money that was stolen. As you pointed out, the emotional and psychological impact on the victims can last long after the crime itself is over. For many people, the fear they experienced during those moments stays with them for years.
I also think it’s important to remember that in this case, one of the victims was reportedly forced to her knees at gunpoint while another was severely beaten. Those are the kinds of circumstances that make these crimes especially serious and underscore why accountability is so important when violence is involved.
