QUEST DIAGNOSTICS CYBERATTACK INVOLVES UNAUTHORIZED ACCESS TO PATIENT RECORDS AS COMPANY INVESTIGATES LAB TESTING SYSTEM BREACH

SECAUCUS, NEW JERSEY — Quest Diagnostics, one of the largest clinical laboratory testing companies in the United States, is investigating a cybersecurity incident involving unauthorized access to a system used by healthcare providers to order laboratory tests and retrieve patient results. The company believes certain patient records were accessed during the intrusion, raising concerns about the exposure of sensitive medical information.

Quest discovered the unauthorized activity on October 21, 2026, within its Quanum Lab Services Manager (LSM) platform. The company disclosed the incident in an October 22 filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), confirming that it activated its cybersecurity incident response procedures, notified federal law enforcement, and engaged outside cybersecurity specialists to investigate the breach.

Quanum Lab Services Manager is an online platform that enables physicians, hospitals, and medical office personnel to order diagnostic tests, retrieve laboratory results, track orders, and manage other laboratory-related services. The platform provides healthcare professionals with access to information used in patient evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment.

Quest temporarily suspended access to the affected system after discovering the intrusion. Several additional services were paused as a precaution while investigators examined the potential extent of the unauthorized activity. The company initially indicated that healthcare providers could continue submitting test requests through alternative methods, including paper requisitions and other available electronic ordering systems.

The company’s SEC filing states that an unauthorized party is believed to have accessed certain patient records. Quest had not identified the number of affected patients or publicly specified which categories of personal or medical information were involved in its initial disclosure.

That uncertainty is significant because laboratory management systems handle information associated with diagnostic testing, including patient identification and medical test orders. The sensitivity of the incident depends on the particular records accessed, their contents, and whether the unauthorized party obtained copies that could be retained or distributed outside the affected system.

Quest stated that the incident had not materially disrupted its overall business operations or its ability to serve patients. The company also reported that its response included containment measures, an assessment of the intrusion, and remediation efforts intended to secure the affected environment.

The unauthorized access was not attributed to a specific criminal organization in the company’s initial disclosure. The company did not identify the method used to enter Quanum LSM, establish how long unauthorized access continued, or publicly confirm that stolen patient information had been offered for sale or published.

By October 23, Quest had reported that the security incident had been remediated and Quanum LSM had been restored. Other services temporarily suspended as a precaution, including Essential Insights and LabHQ, were also restored. The company reported that data in those additional systems had not been accessed.

Restoring the service does not conclude the investigation into patient information. Quest continues examining the records involved and intends to notify affected patients and healthcare providers once it determines whose information was exposed.

Quest’s laboratory network serves a substantial portion of the American healthcare system. The company reports providing diagnostic services to approximately half of U.S. physicians and hospitals and one in three American adults annually. Its extensive reach makes the protection of patient records and the reliability of electronic laboratory services important beyond the specific platform involved.

The company has also stated that the incident was unrelated to recently disclosed PHP vulnerabilities. Its investigation has not publicly established a different initial access method or identified a responsible threat actor.

The October incident places renewed attention on cybersecurity protections surrounding laboratory information systems, where unauthorized access can expose confidential medical records while interruptions to ordering and results platforms can complicate routine healthcare operations.

For Quest Diagnostics, the immediate service disruption has been addressed, but determining the full extent of the patient information exposure remains an unresolved part of the investigation. The company has not yet announced a final affected-patient count or a complete list of compromised data fields.
