PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND — Adetunji Abudu, 34, of Lagos, Nigeria, was arrested at Boston Logan International Airport after attempting to re-enter the United States from Istanbul, Turkey, and has been ordered detained pending trial on federal charges tied to an alleged fraud and money-laundering scheme that targeted elderly Americans.
Abudu is one of six defendants charged in a superseding federal indictment in Rhode Island alleging that the group laundered millions of dollars obtained through fraud schemes operated from Nigeria.
According to the indictment, victims were allegedly deceived through online romance scams, fraudulent sweepstakes schemes, false rental listings, and sham online shipping transactions. Prosecutors allege that money obtained from victims was moved through bank accounts and businesses in Rhode Island, Idaho, and other locations before significant portions of the proceeds were transferred to Nigeria.
Members of the alleged conspiracy are also accused of using fraud proceeds to purchase vehicles that were later shipped overseas.
Federal authorities said Abudu fled the United States for Nigeria in 2019 after the FBI executed a court-authorized search of his residence in North Providence.
Five co-defendants — Dotun Olawale Alonge, Oluwaseyi Akintol, Samson Ikotun, Olabode Shaba, and Oladipup Shodipu — later pleaded guilty to money-laundering conspiracy. Their sentences ranged from time served to 42 months in federal prison.
Abudu was apprehended October 26 at Logan Airport in Boston while returning to the United States from Istanbul. He appeared in U.S. District Court in Rhode Island and was ordered detained pending trial.
The investigation was conducted by the FBI, with assistance from the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, the Tallmadge Police Department in Ohio, and the Moscow Police Department in Idaho.
Assistant U.S. Attorney John P. McAdams is prosecuting the case for the District of Rhode Island.
The charges against Abudu remain allegations. He is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
