UNIVERSITY OF NEW MEXICO HEALTH SCIENCES CENTER RESTORES OPERATIONS AFTER CYBERSECURITY EVENT DISRUPTS CARE

ALBUQUERQUE, NEW MEXICO — The University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center restored critical electronic systems and resumed normal hospital operations after a cybersecurity event on October 26, 2026, temporarily disrupted clinical services and forced ambulance diversions.

UNM Health Sciences said information technology security teams began containment efforts around 11 a.m. after identifying a cybersecurity threat. The organization’s assessment determined that the event affected some end-user devices but did not penetrate core systems or servers. State and federal law enforcement were notified, and external partners were brought in to assist with securing the network and investigating the incident.

From approximately 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., UNM Health temporarily diverted ambulance traffic to other health systems in the Albuquerque and Santa Fe areas while security teams worked to protect the network. System outages also forced the suspension of outpatient surgeries and appointments for the remainder of the day.

UNM Health began restoring operations at approximately 2:30 p.m., bringing systems back online in phases as it was considered safe to do so. By the afternoon of October 27, critical electronic systems were back online, all UNM Health hospitals were fully open, ambulance traffic had returned to normal, and clinics had resumed regularly scheduled appointments and procedures.

The cybersecurity event affected the broader UNM Health Sciences Center, which includes the UNM Health clinical delivery system as well as academic and research operations. Leadership activated an Emergency Operations Center to coordinate the response and provide guidance to employees, students, and clinical teams.

Classes at the UNM School of Medicine, College of Nursing, College of Pharmacy, and College of Population Health remained canceled on October 27. Nonessential Health Sciences Center employees were instructed to remain home, while essential and clinical employees continued reporting to their normal duty locations. Academic and research programs were expected to resume normal operations on October 28.

The incident had immediate operational consequences despite UNM’s finding that core systems and servers were not penetrated. Earlier during the response, the Health System advised patients not to report to UNM Health facilities for scheduled care on October 26 and directed emergencies through 911 while ambulance traffic was being diverted.

A ransomware group calling itself BYOD later claimed responsibility for the incident and alleged that it compromised approximately 36,000 machines across the university’s main campus and hospital systems. The group also claimed to have stolen information belonging to students, patients, and employees.

Those claims have not been confirmed by the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center. UNM’s official update states that the cybersecurity event affected some end-user devices and did not penetrate core systems or servers. The university has also not publicly identified ransomware as the cause of the event.

The incident remains under criminal investigation, and UNM said that limitation prevents the organization from releasing additional details at this stage.
