PENSACOLA, FLORIDA — A 39-year-old Pensacola man has been sentenced to six years and six months in federal prison for multiple drug trafficking and firearms offenses involving fentanyl, methamphetamine, cocaine, and illegally possessed weapons. Akeem Cornell Shaw received the sentence after previously pleading guilty to four federal offenses, according to a November 5, 2026, announcement by U.S. Attorney John P. Heekin for the Northern District of Florida.
Shaw pleaded guilty to possession of fentanyl, methamphetamine, and cocaine with intent to distribute, possession of firearms in furtherance of a drug trafficking offense, possession of firearms by a convicted felon, and possession of a short-barreled rifle. The convictions followed a law enforcement investigation that uncovered controlled substances, multiple firearms, ammunition, and evidence associated with drug distribution inside his residence.
According to federal court documents, investigators executed a search warrant at Shaw’s Pensacola residence in February 2025. During a search of his bedroom, officers discovered three firearms, including a short-barreled rifle, along with quantities of fentanyl, methamphetamine, and cocaine. Investigators also recovered ammunition and additional items indicative of narcotics distribution, establishing evidence supporting the federal charges.
Court records established that Shaw had multiple prior felony convictions, making him legally prohibited from possessing firearms and ammunition. His possession of three weapons, including the short-barreled rifle, resulted in separate federal firearms offenses. The charge involving possession of firearms in furtherance of drug trafficking addressed the connection between the weapons and his narcotics-related criminal activity.
The investigation involved cooperation between the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). Local investigators and federal agents worked together to develop the case and pursue charges addressing both the controlled substances and firearms recovered during the search. The Justice Department’s announcement did not specify the quantities of drugs seized or identify the models of the firearms.
U.S. Attorney Heekin credited the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office and its federal law enforcement partners for their efforts to address armed drug trafficking in the community. He emphasized the importance of prosecuting individuals who distribute controlled substances while unlawfully possessing firearms, describing the case as part of ongoing efforts to reduce violent crime and drug-related activity in Northwest Florida.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Jessica S. Etherton prosecuted the case on behalf of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Florida.
The prosecution was conducted under Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a nationwide Department of Justice initiative coordinating federal, state, local, and tribal law enforcement resources to address violent crime and persistent public safety threats. The program operates through U.S. Attorneys’ Offices across all 94 federal judicial districts, allowing participating agencies to develop enforcement strategies based on the criminal activity affecting their respective communities.
Project Safe Neighborhoods is also identified as a component of Operation Take Back America, a broader Justice Department enforcement initiative. The Justice Department stated that these efforts complement and strengthen Homeland Security Task Forces as part of the broader federal response to public safety threats.
Shaw’s sentencing concludes the federal prosecution resulting from the February 2025 investigation. The case demonstrates the legal consequences of combining illegal drug distribution with prohibited firearm possession, particularly when an individual with prior felony convictions maintains access to multiple weapons while engaging in narcotics-related offenses.
