In a case that’s now shaking school systems across the country, Matthew Lane, a 19-year-old college student from Assumption College, has agreed to plead guilty to a cyberattack and extortion campaign that targeted PowerSchool, the largest educational software provider in North America. Lane didn’t just hack into a system. He pulled off one of the most invasive breaches of student data in recent history — and then demanded millions to keep the information buried.
The Digital Trapdoor
Prosecutors allege that in September 2024, Lane obtained login credentials from a PowerSchool contractor, giving him backdoor access to the company’s internal data systems. Initially, he explored a single school district’s records — but this was just a test run. By December, Lane had scaled up. Using a leased remote server, he exfiltrated data belonging to tens of millions of users — including children.
PowerSchool, which serves over 60 million students and 9 million teachers across 18,000 institutions, found itself facing a nightmare scenario. The company has confirmed it was the unnamed “Victim 2” in DOJ filings and later revealed it received a ransom demand on December 28, 2024 — the exact date mentioned in federal charges.
$2.85 Million or Mass Exposure
Lane’s message was chillingly simple: pay 30 Bitcoin — or face global exposure. That sum, at the time, was worth approximately $2.85 million.
The threat? A leak of deeply personal data — not just names and contact details, but Social Security numbers, residential addresses, medical records, passwords, parent information, and other identifiers. According to the Department of Justice, the scope and sensitivity of the stolen data could create decades-long privacy repercussions for families whose children were swept up in the breach.
“This defendant stole private information about millions of children and teachers, imposed substantial financial costs on his victims and instilled fear in parents that their kids’ information had been leaked into the hands of criminals,” said U.S. Attorney Leah Foley. “All to put a notch in his hacking belt.”
A Compromised Platform and a Spreading Threat
Though PowerSchool has not officially confirmed whether the ransom was paid, sources with direct knowledge say the company did transfer the funds — a desperate attempt to contain the breach before it spiraled out of control. But the damage was already metastasizing.
In the weeks following, at least four separate school districts received follow-up extortion demands — evidence that the stolen data had already been fragmented and repurposed by secondary attackers or shared in underground circles. The implications are grim: even if the original ransom silenced the leak, the dataset itself may now be in motion across black markets.
Sentencing, Penalties, and the Real Fallout
Lane now faces a minimum of two years in prison as part of a plea deal covering multiple federal charges, including:
- Aggravated identity theft
- Unauthorized access to protected computers
- Cyber extortion conspiracy
- Cyber extortion
The agreement also includes financial forfeiture of any ransom funds received, additional fines, and an undisclosed restitution clause.
But here’s the uncomfortable truth: Lane’s punishment won’t restore what was lost. It won’t delete the files that were stolen. It won’t reassure the parents now wondering if their child’s data is sitting in some digital purgatory, ready to be auctioned off to the highest bidder.
PowerSchool’s Damage Control and Public Silence
A spokesperson for PowerSchool said the company is “focused on working through this matter directly with our customers,” offering little in the way of transparency.
This is no surprise. Companies that traffic in sensitive data often walk a tightrope — say too much, and you scare your clients; say too little, and you lose their trust. PowerSchool is now playing both sides, pledging a renewed commitment to its community while deflecting scrutiny around its data security infrastructure.
But if the system was truly secure, a college freshman wouldn’t have waltzed in, taken what he wanted, and walked out demanding millions.
