A former Massachusetts police officer is now facing an additional federal indictment for the alleged killing of both a young woman and her unborn child — a case that has shaken law enforcement and human rights advocates alike.
Matthew Farwell, 39, formerly of the Stoughton Police Department, was previously charged with the murder of Sandra Birchmore, a pregnant woman who authorities say had been sexually exploited by Farwell beginning when she was just fifteen years old. Federal prosecutors now allege that Farwell not only murdered Birchmore but also caused the death of her unborn son.
According to the superseding federal indictment, the crime occurred on or about February 1, 2021, when Farwell allegedly strangled Birchmore inside her Stoughton apartment. Investigators believe he staged the scene to resemble a suicide, intending to conceal the crime and prevent Birchmore from exposing his years-long sexual abuse. The indictment states that Farwell’s intent was deliberate — an act of premeditated violence designed to silence her permanently.
Court documents further detail how, in the months leading up to her death, Birchmore had expressed joy and anticipation about her pregnancy. She had attended prenatal appointments, ordered baby items, and was preparing for a Valentine’s Day announcement. Prosecutors allege Farwell agreed to impregnate her in late 2020 in a desperate attempt to stop her from going public about their relationship, but when she refused to terminate the pregnancy, his response turned lethal.
Investigators say Birchmore was eight to ten weeks pregnant when she was killed. The unborn child’s death adds a federal charge under 18 U.S.C. §1841, which carries a mandatory life sentence if convicted.
Farwell remains in federal custody awaiting arraignment. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Elizabeth Riley, Torey B. Cummings, and Brian A. Fogerty of the Human Trafficking & Civil Rights Unit, with investigative support from the FBI Boston Division.
The allegations have reignited public outrage over the abuse of power within police ranks, especially in cases involving minors. The details revealed in court filings point to a systemic failure in oversight — where authority became a weapon rather than a responsibility.
Federal officials emphasized that Farwell is presumed innocent until proven guilty, but the nature of the charges — murder, sexual exploitation, and the death of an unborn child — represent one of the most disturbing law enforcement indictments in recent Massachusetts history.

It is, indeed, disturbing. If this guy is found guilty it should be of killing two people and his sentence should reflect that.
