BIRMINGHAM MAN SENTENCED TO 20 YEARS IN FEDERAL PRISON FOR ARMED CARJACKING AND KIDNAPPING

A Birmingham man has been sentenced to two decades in federal prison following his conviction on charges stemming from an armed carjacking and kidnapping that unfolded in broad daylight on a city roadway.

Dearrius Dontrell Pace, 31, was sentenced to 240 months in federal custody after pleading guilty to one count of carjacking and one count of kidnapping. The sentence was imposed by United States District Court Judge Madeline H. Haikala in the Northern District of Alabama, reflecting the seriousness of the violent conduct and the lasting danger posed to the victim.

Court records establish that the incident occurred on July 16, 2024, after Pace followed the victim from a gas station along Lloyd Nolan Parkway. As the victim entered his vehicle, Pace confronted him at gunpoint, forcibly taking control of the situation. The victim was ordered into the passenger seat while Pace assumed control of the vehicle and drove away from the scene.

During the drive, Pace demanded the victim’s wallet and cash. The victim surrendered approximately sixteen dollars and explained that he did not have his wallet with him. Prosecutors stated that Pace then struck the victim in the face with a hard object, escalating the violence before ordering the victim out of the vehicle and leaving him behind.

The attack resulted in both physical injury and psychological trauma, factors that were considered during sentencing. Federal authorities emphasized that the offense involved not only the theft of a vehicle, but the unlawful restraint and intimidation of the victim through the use of a firearm, elevating the crime to a kidnapping under federal law.

Law enforcement officials identified and arrested Pace on July 24, 2024, when deputies with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office took him into custody. The investigation was conducted jointly by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, with federal prosecutors later pursuing charges due to the violent nature of the offense and its jurisdictional elements.

Pace entered a guilty plea in September 2025, accepting responsibility for both counts. Assistant United States Attorney Daniel S. McBrayer prosecuted the case on behalf of the United States.

Federal prosecutors noted that carjacking and kidnapping offenses carry severe penalties because they involve immediate threats to life and public safety. The imposed sentence reflects the court’s determination that a lengthy term of incarceration was warranted to address the gravity of the crime and to protect the public.

Pace will serve his sentence in federal custody.
