A former senior executive at one of Atlanta’s most prominent cultural institutions is facing a federal charge tied to an alleged long-running embezzlement operation that diverted more than $600,000 in institutional funds for personal use.
Federal prosecutors have charged Brady Lum, 59, of Atlanta, Georgia, the former chief operating officer of the High Museum of Art, with theft concerning programs receiving federal funds. The charge stems from an alleged scheme in which Lum used his executive authority over financial operations to misappropriate museum funds through falsified documentation and internal approval mechanisms.
According to information presented in court, Lum served as chief operating officer from January 2, 2019, through his resignation on December 9, 2025. In that role, he maintained oversight of the museum’s operational and financial systems, including expense approvals, vendor payments, and internal accounting controls. Prosecutors allege that this access enabled him to execute unauthorized transactions while bypassing standard review processes.
The High Museum of Art, which houses more than 20,000 works and operates extensive exhibition and community programming, receives federal funding, placing it under statutory protections governing the use of such funds. The charge reflects alleged misuse of those funds through internal financial manipulation.
Court filings describe a pattern of personal spending disguised as institutional expense. Lum is accused of purchasing luxury guitars, music-related equipment, private music lessons, and woodworking tools using museum resources. These transactions were processed through direct vendor invoicing and the organization’s corporate credit card reimbursement system.
To conceal the activity, Lum allegedly altered invoices to misrepresent the nature of purchases, submitted those altered documents through the museum’s expense platform, and approved the transactions using delegated authority tied to his executive role. Additional concealment methods included distributing expenses across multiple accounting cost centers to reduce visibility within financial reporting systems.
One cited example details a transaction dated November 29, 2024, in which an invoice submitted for reimbursement reflected a purchase of equipment presented as benefiting the museum, valued at $9,147.87. Investigators determined that the original invoice corresponded to a personal purchase of a guitar and related accessories.
The cumulative activity outlined in the charge indicates that more than $600,000 was diverted through similar methods over the course of Lum’s tenure.
Lum was arraigned before U.S. Magistrate Judge Christopher C. Bly. The charge represents an allegation, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
The investigation is being conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Nicholas N. Joy for the Northern District of Georgia.
