Filipino National Charged in Hawaii Federal Case Involving Alleged Non-Citizen Voting in Federal Elections

HONOLULU — Federal prosecutors in Hawaii have charged a Maui woman with unlawfully voting in federal elections as a non-citizen, according to an announcement released by the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Hawaii.

Federal authorities stated Remedios Alasaas, 66, of Kahului, Maui, was charged by Information on June 1, 2026, with unlawfully voting as an alien after investigators alleged she cast ballots in two separate federal elections while not holding United States citizenship.

According to federal court records, Alasaas entered the United States in or around 2014 on an immigrant visa and later registered to vote despite allegedly understanding she was not a United States citizen at the time.

Federal prosecutors alleged Alasaas cast ballots during the November 8, 2022 general election and again during the August 10, 2024 primary election while remaining a non-citizen.

The case centers on federal laws restricting participation in federal elections to United States citizens. Federal authorities stated election-related offenses involving unlawful voting by non-citizens are treated as violations impacting election integrity and federal voting protections.

U.S. Attorney Ken Sorenson stated the federal government would continue aggressively prosecuting election fraud offenses involving unlawful participation in federal elections by non-citizens.

FBI Honolulu Special Agent in Charge David Porter stated the investigation reflects continuing federal efforts to protect election systems and preserve public confidence in federal election processes.

Federal election-related investigations often involve coordination between federal law enforcement agencies, immigration records reviews, voter registration verification systems, election participation records, and identity documentation analysis. In cases involving alleged unlawful voting by non-citizens, investigators typically examine immigration status records, voter registration applications, signed election certifications, and historical voting activity.

Under federal law, non-citizens are prohibited from voting in federal elections. Violations involving unlawful voting can carry criminal penalties that include imprisonment, supervised release, financial penalties, and potential immigration-related consequences depending on case outcomes and residency status.

Federal prosecutors stated each charge carries a maximum penalty of up to one year in federal prison, along with supervised release and fines of up to $100,000.

The FBI is conducting the investigation.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Gregg Paris Yates.

Federal authorities emphasized that the charges contained in the Information are allegations only and that the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in federal court.
