NEWARK, N.J. — Federal authorities announced the arrest of a Morris County man accused of assaulting multiple federal immigration officers during crowd-control operations outside the Delaney Hall Detention Facility in Newark, New Jersey.
According to federal prosecutors, Brendan John Geier, 26, of Madison, New Jersey, was arrested on May 28, 2026 and charged by criminal complaint with assaulting federal officers and causing bodily injury during a late-night confrontation involving demonstrators and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement personnel assigned to perimeter security operations near the detention facility.
Federal officials stated the incident occurred during an active demonstration outside Delaney Hall, where ICE Deportation Officers were conducting roadway clearance and crowd-control duties connected to security operations surrounding the facility. Authorities alleged demonstrators had blocked access roads leading to and from the detention center, prompting officers to form a perimeter line and issue repeated commands ordering the crowd to move back and clear the roadway.
According to court filings and statements made during proceedings, the confrontation escalated at approximately 10:30 p.m. after officers advanced toward demonstrators positioned in the roadway. Prosecutors alleged that Geier ignored multiple lawful commands to disperse and became physically combative after losing balance during contact with an officer moving toward the crowd line.
Federal authorities alleged Geier kicked one ICE Deportation Officer in the leg before officers attempted to restrain and remove him from the area. During the struggle, prosecutors stated Geier allegedly bit two separate federal officers, including one officer on the forearm and another on the knuckle, while also kicking an officer in the forearm during the altercation.
All three officers involved reportedly received medical treatment from emergency personnel at the scene. Two officers later received additional treatment at a Newark hospital for injuries allegedly sustained during the incident.
The federal complaint alleges the officers involved were actively performing official federal duties connected to perimeter enforcement and facility security operations at the time of the confrontation.
U.S. Attorney Robert Frazer stated federal authorities would continue prosecuting individuals accused of assaulting federal officers during enforcement operations, emphasizing that violence directed at law enforcement personnel would not be tolerated during demonstrations or crowd-control events.
Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche also addressed the incident, stating federal officers assigned to protect federal property and facilities had faced escalating confrontations during recent demonstrations connected to Delaney Hall operations. Federal officials alleged multiple arrests had occurred during several days of unrest surrounding the facility.
Department of Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin stated the administration would continue pursuing prosecutions involving assaults against federal law enforcement personnel. Homeland Security Investigations Newark Acting Special Agent in Charge Spiros Karabinas stated authorities considered assaults against officers during demonstrations to be criminal conduct rather than protected protest activity.
Federal immigration officials stated 21 individuals had reportedly been arrested between May 26 and May 29 in connection with alleged assaults against federal officers near Delaney Hall.
Geier appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Cari Fais and was released pending further proceedings under multiple conditions, including location monitoring, a curfew, and restrictions prohibiting him from returning to Delaney Hall.
Federal prosecutors stated the assault resulting in bodily injury charge carries a maximum potential penalty of up to 20 years in federal prison and a maximum fine of $250,000 if convicted.
The investigation is being conducted by Homeland Security Investigations Newark under the direction of Acting Special Agent in Charge Michael S. McCarthy, with assistance from Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Brian Sinclair of the General Crimes Unit in Newark.
Federal authorities emphasized that the criminal complaint contains allegations only and that the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
