Brooklyn Man Charged After Allegedly Threatening to Kill ICE Officer and Officer’s Family Outside Newark Detention Facility

NEWARK, N.J. — Federal authorities have charged a Brooklyn man after investigators alleged he threatened to murder a federal immigration officer and the officer’s family during a demonstration outside the Delaney Hall ICE detention facility in Newark, New Jersey.

According to federal prosecutors, Nicholas Matthew Scelfo, 27, of Brooklyn, New York, was arrested and charged with influencing, impeding, and retaliating against a federal officer by threat following an investigation involving the FBI, Joint Terrorism Task Force personnel, Homeland Security Investigations, and the New York Police Department.

Federal authorities stated Scelfo appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Stacey D. Adams in Newark federal court on June 1, 2026, where he was released on a $100,000 bond under conditions that included a prohibition against returning to Delaney Hall.

The case centers on alleged threats made during a May 27, 2026 demonstration outside the federal immigration detention facility, where federal authorities stated tensions had escalated during multiple days of protests, crowd-control operations, and confrontations involving demonstrators and federal immigration personnel.

According to court filings and statements presented in court, investigators reviewed video footage posted to social media along with additional evidence collected during the investigation. Prosecutors alleged Scelfo directed explicit death threats toward a federal ICE officer, including threats against the officer’s wife and children.

Federal authorities alleged Scelfo shouted:
“I’ll kill your whole fucking family! Your whole fucking family is dead! Your children, your wife, all dead! I have your face, motherfucker! You’re dead! Dead!”

Investigators stated the alleged threats were directed toward a federal officer actively engaged in official duties outside the detention facility during demonstration activity.

Federal officials emphasized that threats directed toward federal officers and their families are treated as serious federal offenses, particularly when threats involve explicit statements concerning murder, retaliation, targeted violence, or family intimidation.

According to federal authorities, investigators rapidly identified and located the suspect through investigative analysis that included facial recognition technology and coordinated interagency intelligence work involving FBI Newark and FBI New York personnel.

FBI Director Kash Patel stated the suspect was identified within approximately 24 hours through investigative coordination involving federal agents and task force personnel. Federal officials described the case as part of a broader effort to address escalating threats, harassment, and intimidation directed at immigration enforcement personnel operating during ongoing federal enforcement operations.

Department of Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin stated federal immigration officers had experienced a significant increase in threats, doxxing incidents, and hostility directed toward officers and their families during recent immigration enforcement operations nationwide.

FBI Newark Special Agent in Charge Stefanie Roddy stated the investigation focused on alleged criminal threats rather than constitutionally protected protest activity, emphasizing that violent threats toward federal officers fall outside protected speech protections when they involve direct intimidation or calls for violence.

Acting Special Agent in Charge Spiros Karabinas of Homeland Security Investigations Newark stated threats involving the murder of federal officers and family members constitute grave criminal offenses and would continue receiving aggressive investigative attention from federal authorities.

The investigation was conducted by special agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and task force officers assigned to the Joint Terrorism Task Force under the direction of Special Agent in Charge Stefanie Roddy in Newark and Assistant Director in Charge James C. Barnacle Jr. in New York. Homeland Security Investigations Newark and the New York Police Department also assisted in the investigation.

Federal prosecutors stated the charge carries a maximum potential penalty of up to 10 years in federal prison and a maximum fine of $250,000 if convicted.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Camila A. Garces and Casey S. Smith of the National Security Unit in Newark.
