EAST LANSING, MICHIGAN — Michigan State University is facing claims from the BYOD ransomware group that personal information belonging to approximately 1.3 million current and former students was stolen during a cybersecurity incident. The group publicly identified the university as a target on November 1, 2026, connecting its allegations to suspicious network activity that prompted Michigan State to require password resets across campus in early October. University officials have not confirmed that the alleged data theft occurred.

Michigan State first acknowledged suspicious cybersecurity activity on October 1, when its information technology department instructed students, faculty, and staff to reset their MSU NetID passwords. The university required replacement passwords containing at least 15 characters as a precautionary measure to protect institutional accounts and connected systems. The directive applied broadly to university account holders while security personnel investigated the potential exposure of login credentials.

According to statements issued by Michigan State, the investigation initially pointed toward a possible credential compromise rather than a confirmed intrusion into the university’s central Active Directory environment. Active Directory manages authentication and access to network resources, making it a critical component of institutional cybersecurity. University officials stated that the available evidence did not indicate a successful compromise of that environment or establish that additional university data had been accessed, altered, or stolen.

The BYOD group’s allegations present a significantly different account. By publicly naming Michigan State on its data-leak platform, the group claimed possession of personal information associated with a substantial number of university students and alumni. Such claims are commonly used by ransomware operators to pressure organizations into negotiations or damage their reputations. The group’s statements have not been independently substantiated, and Michigan State has not publicly confirmed that the reported 1.3 million records were compromised.

The same ransomware group recently claimed responsibility for a cybersecurity incident affecting the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center on October 26, 2026. That incident disrupted hospital operations and forced the temporary diversion of ambulance traffic to other medical facilities. Outpatient surgeries and appointments were also suspended while information technology personnel worked to secure affected systems. University officials reported that the disruption involved end-user devices but did not penetrate core servers or systems.

By October 28, the University of New Mexico reported that clinical services and academic operations had returned to normal. The institution also stated that it had made no concessions to the group responsible for the threat and warned patients, employees, and students against communicating with individuals claiming responsibility for the incident. The BYOD group’s claims concerning stolen information and the extent of its access remain separate from the university’s confirmed investigative findings.

BYOD is a relatively new ransomware operation that emerged in September 2026. Public information about its membership, infrastructure, and organizational structure remains limited. The group has also claimed involvement in other high-profile incidents, including an alleged compromise involving Trump Mobile customer information. Those allegations have attracted additional scrutiny, although the group’s responsibility for each claimed intrusion has not been independently established.

Michigan State previously experienced a separate ransomware incident in 2020 involving the NetWalker operation. The earlier attack illustrates the continuing exposure of large academic institutions to cybercriminal activity, particularly where extensive networks support research, administrative operations, financial services, and large populations of students and employees. There is no established connection between the earlier NetWalker incident and the current BYOD allegations.

The latest claims raise concerns about the possible exposure of personal information and the security of university authentication systems. If sensitive records were obtained, affected individuals could face additional risks involving identity theft, phishing, and unauthorized account access. Those consequences remain potential risks rather than confirmed outcomes of the October incident.
