FBI HONOLULU WARNS OF LAW ENFORCEMENT IMPERSONATION SCAMS USING SPOOFED PHONE NUMBERS AND FAKE VIDEO MEETINGS

HONOLULU, HAWAII — The FBI Honolulu Field Office issued a public warning on November 2, 2026, concerning a variation of a long-running impersonation scam targeting Hawaii residents. Criminals are posing as federal law enforcement officers, including agents from the FBI, Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), and U.S. Secret Service, to deceive individuals into surrendering money or sensitive personal information.

According to the FBI, recent reports indicate that scammers are using deceptive techniques designed to make fraudulent communications appear legitimate. One method involves caller ID spoofing, which allows criminals to manipulate the telephone number displayed on a recipient’s device. Scammers have impersonated official federal field office numbers, including FBI Honolulu, while identifying themselves using the names of actual agents or fabricated identities.

Investigators also received a report involving a scammer who appeared during a virtual meeting using a background designed to resemble a federal government office. The individual wore business attire and positioned themselves in front of official-looking decorations, creating the appearance of a legitimate government representative. This tactic demonstrates how fraudsters are extending their impersonation schemes beyond telephone calls and text messages to include staged video communications.

The FBI emphasizes that federal law enforcement authorities do not contact members of the public by telephone or text message to demand payments or obtain sensitive personal information. Legitimate agencies will not require individuals to transfer funds through cryptocurrency, prepaid gift cards, or couriers. Anyone receiving such demands should immediately recognize them as warning signs of potential fraud.

Residents contacted by someone claiming to represent federal law enforcement are advised to independently verify the person’s identity before disclosing information or taking action. The FBI recommends obtaining an agency’s official telephone number from a trusted public source and contacting the office directly. Individuals should never rely on telephone numbers, website addresses, or verification instructions supplied by an unfamiliar caller.

The bureau also cautions against clicking unfamiliar website links sent during these interactions. Fraudulent websites may closely resemble official government pages while using altered spellings or misleading domain extensions. Residents should examine web addresses carefully and verify that they lead to legitimate government domains before entering personal information.

When impersonation occurs through a video meeting, the FBI recommends preserving screenshots, recordings, and other available evidence when possible. Suspicious communications can be reported through the FBI’s official tip submission system at tips.fbi.gov or by calling 1-800-CALL-FBI (1-800-225-5324).

Individuals who have already provided money or personal information to suspected scammers should immediately discontinue contact and notify their financial institutions to protect affected accounts. Victims are also encouraged to contact local law enforcement and submit a complaint to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center at http://www.ic3.gov, including relevant messages, screenshots, transaction information, and other documentation that may assist investigators.
