FBI Details Massive Multi-Agency Response Following Bakersfield Hostage Crisis That Ended With Suspect Neutralized

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — Federal authorities released new details surrounding the large-scale hostage situation that unfolded in downtown Bakersfield after a bomb threat escalated into a prolonged overnight standoff involving multiple hostages, heavily armed federal tactical units, bomb technicians, and the FBI’s elite Hostage Rescue Team.

During public remarks delivered June 3, 2026, FBI Sacramento Special Agent in Charge Sid Patel described the incident as a “horrific event” and outlined the coordinated law enforcement response that brought the hours-long crisis to an end.

According to Patel, the FBI received a request for assistance from the Bakersfield Police Department at approximately 1:30 p.m. on June 2 following reports of a bomb threat at the Chase Bank building located near Chester Avenue and 17th Street in Bakersfield.

Federal authorities stated the FBI rapidly deployed personnel from nearby field offices along with specialized tactical and crisis response units. More than 150 FBI personnel participated in the operation, including SWAT teams from Sacramento and Los Angeles, crisis negotiation teams, bomb technicians from Sacramento, Los Angeles, and San Francisco, intelligence analysts, victim specialists, and additional professional support personnel trained in major incident response operations.

The response later expanded to include deployment of the FBI’s Hostage Rescue Team (HRT) from Quantico, Virginia. Patel described the HRT as the FBI’s premier tactical unit used for the nation’s highest-risk hostage and counterterrorism operations.

According to authorities, the suspect was identified as Anthony Scott Searles Harris, 41, a former U.S. Army servicemember who served between 2006 and 2007 before receiving a dishonorable discharge connected to being absent without leave.

Federal officials stated Harris also possessed a violent criminal history involving weapons offenses and was a registered sex offender connected to a 2014 charge involving sex acts with a child under the age of 14.

Investigators stated Harris barricaded himself inside the building and tied up five hostages on the second floor of the Kern County Superintendent of Schools office located inside the Chase building complex. Authorities later confirmed there were a total of 10 hostages involved during the incident.

According to Patel, one hostage was released at approximately 4:00 p.m., followed by a second hostage release at approximately 8:30 p.m.

Federal officials praised Bakersfield Police Department negotiators and tactical personnel for their handling of the early stages of the crisis. At approximately 9:00 p.m., FBI SWAT teams from Sacramento and Los Angeles formally transitioned into operational control of the crisis site while continuing joint coordination with Bakersfield Police Department negotiators.

After arriving overnight, the FBI Hostage Rescue Team assumed command of tactical operations at approximately 2:00 a.m. following extensive site analysis, intelligence gathering, and operational planning.

At approximately 4:30 a.m. on June 3, federal authorities stated the FBI Hostage Rescue Team “neutralized” Harris, ending the standoff.

Officials confirmed all 10 hostages survived the incident without physical injuries, although authorities acknowledged the severe psychological trauma likely experienced by those involved. FBI victim specialists are expected to continue assisting the hostages and their families.

The operation involved an extensive multi-agency response including the FBI, Bakersfield Police Department, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), U.S. Marshals Service, Air Force Office of Special Investigations (OSI), California Office of Emergency Services, California Highway Patrol, Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department Bomb Squad, Kern County Sheriff’s Office, Bakersfield Fire Department, emergency medical services personnel, and additional local, state, and federal agencies.

Patel described the response as a “one team, one fight” operation involving law enforcement and emergency response personnel from across California and federal agencies nationwide.
