FBI ARRESTS MASSACHUSETTS MAN ACCUSED IN TWO ARMED BANK ROBBERIES ACROSS TWO STATES

A Massachusetts man accused of carrying out two armed bank robberies in separate states is now in federal custody after investigators tracked him to Upstate New York, bringing a multi-state manhunt to an end.

According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Joseph Sawyer, 52, of Townsend, Massachusetts, was arrested in connection with armed bank robberies that occurred on June 12, 2026, in Nashua, New Hampshire, and on June 27, 2026, in Boonton, New Jersey.

Federal authorities allege that Sawyer robbed St. Mary’s Bank, located at 4 Northwest Boulevard in Nashua, and a Chase Bank located at 530 Myrtle Avenue in Boonton.

According to a criminal complaint filed in the District of New Hampshire, Sawyer allegedly entered both financial institutions while displaying what appeared to be a black semiautomatic handgun. Investigators allege he ordered employees and customers to get on the ground before demanding money and instructing those inside the banks to surrender their cell phones.

Although authorities have not disclosed the amount of money taken during either robbery, investigators consider offenses of this nature particularly dangerous because they place bank employees and customers at immediate risk of serious injury while creating fear and panic inside occupied financial institutions.

The investigation ultimately led federal agents to Upstate New York, where FBI Boston and the Nashua Police Department developed information indicating Sawyer’s possible location.

On the evening of July 8, Sawyer was taken into custody by the FBI Albany SWAT Team without the need for a prolonged public confrontation, ending the interstate investigation.

The arrest was the result of coordinated efforts involving multiple federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies, including:

• FBI Albany
• FBI New Jersey
• Nashua Police Department
• New Jersey State Police
• New York State Police
• Warren County Sheriff’s Office
• United States Attorney’s Offices for the District of New Jersey, the Northern District of New York, the District of Massachusetts, and the District of New Hampshire

The criminal case is being prosecuted by the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of New Hampshire.

Because the case remains active, the allegations contained in the criminal complaint have not yet been proven in court. Joseph Sawyer is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
