FBI CHICAGO WARNS STUDENTS THAT SCHOOL THREATS AND “PRANK” POSTS CAN CARRY SERIOUS CONSEQUENCES

CHICAGO — As students return to classrooms across the Chicago area, the FBI is warning that threats involving schools, violence, shootings, or bombings are treated seriously even when the person responsible claims the message was intended as a joke.

The FBI Chicago Field Office issued the warning on August 27, 2026, reminding students, parents, and caregivers that threatening statements made verbally, in writing, through text messages, on social media, or inside online group chats can trigger law-enforcement investigations and lead to serious disciplinary or criminal consequences.

Acting Special Agent in Charge Ryan Whalen said the FBI and its law-enforcement partners investigate alleged threats of violence regardless of the stated intent behind them.

Students responsible for such threats can face consequences ranging from school suspension or expulsion to arrest, prosecution, and imprisonment depending on the circumstances and applicable law.

The FBI said threats also create consequences far beyond the individual who posts or sends them.

Law-enforcement officers, emergency responders, school administrators, and other public-safety personnel may be diverted from legitimate emergencies while investigators determine whether a threat is credible.

Schools and surrounding communities can also experience fear, disruption, stress, and trauma while authorities respond.

The FBI’s National Threat Operations Center receives thousands of tips every year involving threats of violence directed toward schools.

Those reports range from specific threats against identifiable locations or individuals to vague or cryptic statements posted through social media.

Some tips allow investigators to intervene before violence occurs. Other investigations ultimately lead to individuals who claim the communication was intended as a prank.

The FBI emphasized that calling a threat a joke after it is discovered does not eliminate the disruption or danger created by the communication.

Investigators work with federal, state, and local partners to determine the credibility of reported threats, identify the person responsible, share intelligence, and decide what investigative or prosecutorial action is appropriate.

The FBI Chicago office also noted that social-media companies are reporting language they identify as threatening to law enforcement, including communications posted within private group chats.

That means students should not assume that threatening language remains private simply because it was shared inside a limited online conversation.

The FBI also works with prosecutors when conduct potentially violates federal or state law.

The warning comes as students return to school across Chicagoland, with the FBI emphasizing that threats can divert law-enforcement resources, endanger victims and first responders, and create serious emotional consequences for schools and communities.

The FBI did not identify a specific current school threat connected to the August 27 advisory. The announcement is a preventive public-safety warning directed toward students and families across Chicagoland.

Anyone who sees or receives a threat involving potential school violence, including a shooting or bombing threat, should immediately contact local law enforcement through 9-1-1.

Information can also be reported to the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI (1-800-225-5324) or through tips.fbi.gov.

The FBI’s message is direct: online threats can trigger real-world investigations, emergency responses, arrests, and criminal prosecution regardless of whether the person responsible later claims there was no intention to carry out the threat.
