REGISTERED SEX OFFENDER PLEADS GUILTY TO ENTICING AND SEXUALLY ABUSING TWO 14-YEAR-OLD VICTIMS HE MET ONLINE

SEATTLE — A 29-year-old registered sex offender who had been living in Snohomish County has pleaded guilty in federal court to two counts of enticement of a minor after admitting that he met two 14-year-old victims online, communicated with them through multiple social-media and messaging platforms, and sexually abused them during separate periods in 2025.

Aqeel Ibn-Khalid Shareef entered his guilty plea on September 21 in U.S. District Court in Seattle. The charges carry a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years in federal prison and a maximum sentence of life. U.S. District Judge Kymberly K. Evanson is scheduled to sentence Shareef on December 14, 2026.

The case developed while Shareef was already under state supervision for prior sex crimes.

According to court records cited by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Washington, Shareef was convicted in January 2024 of state offenses that included rape of a child. He was ordered to register as a sex offender and, after completing his prison term, was monitored by the Washington State Department of Corrections.

In October 2025, Shareef’s Department of Corrections community corrections officer became concerned that he was possessing unauthorized electronic devices in violation of the conditions imposed on him and began examining whether he was complying with supervision.

The concern led to Shareef’s arrest by the Pacific Northwest Violent Offender Task Force. Officers seized two unauthorized electronic devices, and investigators later discovered communications with minor victims and images documenting sexual abuse. Shareef was initially charged by criminal complaint in October 2025 with production of child sexual abuse material and was indicted by a federal grand jury on November 12, 2025.

The federal guilty plea now establishes Shareef’s criminal responsibility for two counts of enticement of a minor.

In his plea, Shareef admitted that he met both victims online and communicated with them through Discord, Signal, Instagram, and TikTok. One victim was contacted and sexually abused during July and August 2025. The second victim was contacted and sexually abused during September and October 2025. Both victims were 14 years old.

The case demonstrates how online communication platforms can become part of an exploitation sequence that begins with digital contact and progresses into direct physical abuse.

Discord, Signal, Instagram, and TikTok serve very different functions, but all can provide direct or private communication channels between users. In this case, Shareef admitted using those platforms to communicate with the two minors before sexually abusing them.

Enticement of a minor carries a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years in federal prison and a maximum sentence of life.

The plea agreement establishes a sentencing framework but does not determine the final punishment.

Federal prosecutors have agreed to recommend a 20-year prison sentence. The defense may recommend a sentence no lower than 15 years. Judge Evanson is not bound by either recommendation and may impose any sentence authorized by federal law.

A related King County Superior Court case charging Shareef with sex crimes will be dismissed as part of the resolution of the federal case.

The federal investigation involved the FBI working in coordination with the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, Seattle Police Department officers, and the Washington State Department of Corrections. Assistant U.S. Attorney Cecelia Gregson is prosecuting the case.

The prosecution is part of Project Safe Childhood, the Justice Department initiative launched in 2006 to coordinate federal, state, and local efforts against child sexual exploitation and abuse. The program combines the work of U.S. Attorneys’ Offices, the Justice Department’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section, federal investigators, local law enforcement, and task forces focused on identifying offenders and locating victims.

The investigative structure is particularly important in cases involving offenders already subject to criminal supervision.

Shareef’s new federal case developed after his state community corrections officer identified concerns involving unauthorized electronic devices. That compliance investigation led to the seizure of devices that ultimately exposed communications and sexual abuse evidence involving two minors.

The sequence also underscores the importance of post-conviction supervision in cases involving registered sex offenders. Electronic-device restrictions, monitoring requirements, and compliance checks can become critical when an offender has previously been convicted of sexual crimes involving children.

Shareef’s current federal case is no longer at the allegation stage.

He has admitted that he used online platforms to communicate with two 14-year-old victims and has pleaded guilty to two federal counts of enticement of a minor. His prior 2024 conviction for state sex crimes, including rape of a child, also remains an established part of his criminal history.

On December 14, Judge Evanson will determine how much time Shareef will serve within the range authorized by federal law, with prosecutors seeking 20 years and the defense permitted to seek no less than 15.
