BUFFALO, N.Y. — A Buffalo smoke shop owner has been sentenced to nine years in federal prison after investigators used controlled purchases and multiple search warrants to uncover a cocaine trafficking operation tied to his Delaware Avenue business.
U.S. Attorney Michael DiGiacomo announced that Basheer Saleh, 42, of Buffalo, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Lawrence J. Vilardo to 108 months in prison following his conviction for possession with intent to distribute 500 grams of cocaine.
The investigation began in July 2025, when federal law enforcement started examining Saleh’s suspected drug trafficking activity. Investigators then conducted four controlled purchases of cocaine during July and August 2025 at Sweet Puff’s Smoke Shop on Delaware Avenue in Buffalo.
Those four controlled buys involved approximately 532 grams of cocaine, giving investigators direct evidence of cocaine distribution activity connected to the business.
The investigation escalated on September 2, 2025, when law enforcement executed search warrants at several locations associated with Saleh. Those locations included Sweet Puff’s Smoke Shop, a vacant neighboring storefront owned by Saleh and his Delaware Avenue residence.
During the searches, investigators seized approximately 5,000 grams of cocaine, equivalent to about five kilograms, along with a quantity of crack cocaine, drug paraphernalia and ammunition.
The amount of cocaine recovered substantially exceeded the 500-gram quantity identified in Saleh’s conviction and demonstrated the larger scale of the trafficking activity uncovered during the investigation.
The investigation was conducted by the FBI under the direction of Special Agent-in-Charge Allen D. Davis II and the Drug Enforcement Administration under the direction of Special Agent-in-Charge Farhana Islam of the New York Field Division.
Assistant U.S. Attorneys Matt I. Kass and Monica Benjovsky prosecuted the case.
Saleh’s sentencing brings the federal prosecution to the punishment stage after the controlled purchases, search warrants and seizure of approximately five kilograms of cocaine that formed the core of the investigation.
