LAS VEGAS MAN SENTENCED TO MORE THAN 23 YEARS FOR SEXUALLY EXPLOITING TWO CHILDREN AND POSSESSING CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE MATERIAL

LAS VEGAS — A Las Vegas man has been sentenced to more than 23 years in federal prison after admitting that he sexually exploited two young children who were in his care, recorded the abuse and maintained hundreds of images of child sexual abuse material on digital devices.

Adam Joseph Cardenas was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Gloria M. Navarro to 281 months in prison, equivalent to 23 years and five months, followed by 35 years of supervised release.

Cardenas pleaded guilty to two counts of sexual exploitation of children and one count of possession of child pornography.

According to federal court records, Cardenas coerced a seven-year-old child and a three-year-old child, both of whom were in his care, into sexually explicit conduct for the purpose of creating images and videos of the abuse.

Investigators also determined that Cardenas distributed images through a mobile messaging application, extending the abuse beyond the initial production of the material by allowing sexually exploitative content to circulate electronically.

Authorities found that Cardenas possessed more than 600 images of child sexual abuse material. Federal prosecutors said the collection included depictions of children as young as infants.

First Assistant U.S. Attorney Sigal Chattah for the District of Nevada said the sentence demonstrates that individuals who sexually exploit children through technological means will face severe consequences.

FBI Las Vegas Special Agent in Charge Christopher S. Delzotto said protecting children remains a central FBI priority and emphasized cooperation among federal, state, local and tribal law enforcement agencies in identifying individuals who exploit vulnerable victims.

Under the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act, Cardenas must register as a sex offender and keep that registration current where he resides and where he is an employee or student. His 35-year term of supervised release will begin after completion of his prison sentence.

The FBI investigated the case.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Afroza Yeasmin prosecuted the case for the District of Nevada.

The prosecution was brought under Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide Justice Department initiative launched in May 2006 to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse. Led by U.S. Attorneys’ Offices and the Justice Department’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section, the initiative coordinates federal, state and local resources to locate, apprehend and prosecute individuals who exploit children through the internet and to identify and rescue victims.
