NEWPORT NEWS, VIRGINIA — A Virginia man with an extensive criminal history has been sentenced to 38 years and six months in federal prison following his conviction for a series of armed robberies targeting banks and credit unions across southeastern Virginia. The case involved stolen rental vehicles, concealed license plates, firearms, and a police pursuit that ultimately helped investigators connect him to the crimes.
Tyrone K. Jefferson, 38, of Newport News, received the sentence on October 15, 2026, from Senior U.S. District Judge Raymond A. Jackson in the Eastern District of Virginia. A federal jury convicted Jefferson on April 24, 2026, of bank robbery, bank robbery with a dangerous weapon, brandishing a firearm in furtherance of a violent crime, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
According to evidence presented at trial, Jefferson worked for a rental car company that gave him access to vehicles and company-owned license plates. He exploited that access by stealing several plates and a sedan, which he subsequently used to carry out robberies between February 4 and February 26, 2025.
During that period, Jefferson robbed two banks and a credit union. His approach involved throwing a bag toward bank tellers and demanding that they fill it with cash, specifically instructing them not to include dye packs or tracking devices. He displayed a firearm during two of the robberies, placing employees under the immediate threat of armed violence.
Investigators also established that Jefferson used the stolen sedan to travel to a casino in Portsmouth following the robberies, creating an additional connection between his movements and the vehicle used in the crimes.
On February 27, 2025, Newport News Police attempted to stop the stolen sedan. Jefferson accelerated away at high speed before abandoning the vehicle and escaping on foot. Officers searching the sedan discovered mail, court documents, and other paperwork addressed to him, providing investigators with evidence directly connecting him to the vehicle.
Jefferson continued committing robberies despite the police encounter. On March 1, 2025, he robbed another credit union, brandishing a firearm and ordering two tellers to place money into a bag before fleeing on foot.
The investigation advanced on March 27, 2025, when authorities located Jefferson at the same Portsmouth casino he had visited following earlier robberies. This time, he had traveled in a rented vehicle.
A search of that vehicle uncovered rental paperwork bearing Jefferson’s name, a stolen handgun, an extended ammunition magazine, a black balaclava, a traffic safety vest, and stolen license plates associated with the earlier robberies.
Jefferson’s criminal record also established that he was prohibited from possessing firearms or ammunition under federal law. Prosecutors identified five previous felony convictions, including a 2018 conviction for assaulting a federal employee after using mace against a Navy police officer. His record also included convictions involving stolen property, hit-and-run offenses, motor vehicle theft, illegal firearm possession, and fleeing law enforcement.
Under federal law, bank robbery offenses involving intimidation, dangerous weapons, or threats of violence can carry substantial prison sentences. Separate firearm charges may result in additional mandatory penalties, particularly when a weapon is brandished during a qualifying crime of violence.
The prohibition against firearm possession by convicted felons also operates independently of the robbery charges. Jefferson’s prior felony convictions therefore provided a separate legal basis for his federal firearm conviction.
The investigation involved cooperation among Virginia law enforcement agencies, including the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office, Smithfield Police Department, Henrico County Police Division, and Newport News Police Department.
Theophani K. Stamos, First Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, and Ian Kaufmann, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI’s Richmond Field Office, announced the sentence following the federal court proceedings.
Assistant U.S. Attorneys Mack Coleman and Alyson C. Yates prosecuted the case.
The prosecution falls within the federal government’s Project Safe Neighborhoods initiative, which coordinates law enforcement resources to address violent crime, repeat offenders, and criminal firearm activity. The program brings together federal prosecutors, investigative agencies, and local authorities to pursue cases involving significant public safety threats.
With the federal jury’s guilty verdict and the court’s imposition of a 38-year-and-six-month sentence, Jefferson now faces a substantial prison term for the armed robberies and related firearm offenses.
