BRUNSWICK MAN ARRESTED ON FEDERAL CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE MATERIAL CHARGES FOLLOWING MULTI-STATE FBI INVESTIGATION

CLEVELAND, OHIO — A 45-year-old Brunswick man has been arrested on federal charges involving alleged online sexual exploitation of minors following a joint investigation spanning Ohio and Pennsylvania. Leonard Paul Funk Jr. was taken into federal custody on November 4, 2026, after investigators identified suspected criminal activity involving online communications with minors, according to a November 6 announcement from the FBI Cleveland Field Office’s Akron Resident Agency.

The investigation began following online interactions dating to spring 2026, when Funk allegedly communicated with a minor and engaged in illicit conduct. In September 2026, the FBI Pittsburgh Task Force, Allegheny County Police Department, and FBI’s Child Exploitation and Human Trafficking Task Force became aware of the communications and identified additional interactions involving other minors. The findings prompted a coordinated investigation involving law enforcement agencies across state lines.

According to the FBI, the alleged activity extended from the Toledo, Ohio, area to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Investigators worked to identify Funk and examine the reported communications, with personnel from multiple agencies contributing to the investigation. The investigation involved the FBI Cleveland Field Office’s Akron Resident Agency, Brunswick Police Department, Medina County Sheriff’s Office, Tiffin Police Department, and Allegheny County Police Department.

Federal authorities confirmed that Funk was already registered as a Tier I sex offender with the Medina County Sheriff’s Office. Ohio’s sex offender classification system establishes registration requirements for individuals with qualifying prior offenses.

On November 4, 2026, law enforcement officers located Funk at his residence in Brunswick, where he was arrested without incident. He was placed into federal custody and appeared in federal court in Ohio that same day. The FBI confirmed that the federal criminal complaint had been unsealed but did not disclose additional evidence beyond the information contained in the complaint affidavit.

Funk faces charges under 18 U.S.C. § 2252(a)(2), a federal statute addressing the knowing receipt or distribution of visual depictions involving the sexual exploitation of minors through interstate, foreign, or electronic means. The announcement did not specify the ages of the minors involved or identify the communications underlying that charge.

The FBI has not disclosed the social media platforms or communication services allegedly used during the offenses. Authorities also have not publicly identified the minors involved or provided additional information about the electronic evidence obtained during the investigation.
