A New Hunting Ground: From British Luxury to American Retail
A threat actor previously believed to have disbanded is back — and this time, it’s the U.S. retail sector in the crosshairs.
Google’s Threat Intelligence Group (GTIG) has issued a direct warning: Scattered Spider, a highly adaptive and historically destructive hacking collective, has shifted its focus from high-end British retailers to major American retail operations. The group, officially tracked as UNC3944, is believed to be behind the recent wave of ransomware and extortion operations striking U.S. targets.
Their tactics are not subtle. They’re aggressive, highly coordinated, and devastatingly effective against even the most mature cybersecurity infrastructures.
A Pattern of Singular Focus — Then Devastation
According to GTIG chief analyst John Hultquist, this isn’t random noise — it’s a pattern.
“The actor… has a history of focusing their efforts on a single sector at a time, and we anticipate they will continue to target the sector in the near term.”
Previously, Scattered Spider had launched targeted ransomware campaigns across the U.K., affecting marquee names like Marks & Spencer, Harrods, and The Co-op, using DragonForce ransomware to monetize network access. In each case, the attackers didn’t just disrupt — they leveraged prolonged lateral movement, privilege escalation, and vendor compromise to stay embedded.
Now, that same model is being replicated in the U.S.
Who Is Scattered Spider?
Scattered Spider isn’t your typical ransomware gang. It’s a loosely affiliated crew of English-speaking cybercriminals, many of them U.S.-based, who originated from a larger digital underworld community calling itself “The Community” — also known as “The Com.”
This group gained notoriety for its advanced social engineering campaigns, including:
- Impersonating IT helpdesk personnel
- Bypassing MFA via SMS flooding (aka MFA fatigue)
- SIM-swapping telecom workers to hijack authentication
- Breaching customer service software used by multiple vendors
In 2023, U.S. officials publicly connected them to the MGM Resorts and Caesars Entertainment breaches, where operations caused tens of millions in downtime, data exposure, and ransom payments. Additional victims tied to their playbook include:
- Coinbase
- Twilio
- Mailchimp
- LastPass
- Riot Games
Arrests, Then Resurgence
While the group was thought to have splintered after a wave of arrests — including the 2023 apprehension of a U.K. teenager and the indictment of five U.S.-based members in late 2023 — the latest activity suggests otherwise.
Scattered Spider has returned. And they’ve learned from the heat.
Their new operations demonstrate enhanced stealth, sharper toolkits, and greater reliance on third-party vendors to gain indirect access to high-value networks. They aren’t just breaching targets — they’re weaponizing trust in the supply chain.
The U.S. Retail Sector Is Now a Live Battlefield
Why retail? Because it’s soft, vast, and vulnerable.
Retailers manage millions of customer accounts, extensive backend infrastructure, and payment systems ripe for ransomware leverage — often without the same hardened protections seen in finance or defense sectors.
Google’s warning isn’t speculative. It’s a signal flare. U.S. retailers are now priority targets, and the malware chains are already active.
“These actors are aggressive, creative, and particularly effective at circumventing mature security programs,” Hultquist warned. “They’ve had a lot of success with social engineering and leveraging third parties to gain entry.”
