A Rental Car Turned Phishing Tower

Within minutes, the car was stopped, and inside officers found a fully mobile SMS blasting unit, complete with a false base station, router, power supply, and a shark-fin antenna mounted on the roof to camouflage the signal hardware.
The setup was capable of pushing out up to 10,000 phishing messages per day, blanketing entire streets with fraudulent texts that appeared to come from legitimate banks or government agencies. The result: victims redirected to fake websites where their banking credentials and one-time passcodes were stolen, with accounts drained within minutes.
Arrests and Syndicate Trail
Thai police arrested two men, ages 23 and 25, on August 15, seizing the equipment. Both suspects confessed they had been hired by a Chinese handler and were being paid roughly 3,300 baht ($100) per day to drive the vehicle on double shifts through Bangkok’s busiest commercial districts.
This is not an isolated case. Earlier this month, two other Thai men were caught operating a similar system from a Mazda. In both cases, the handlers were reportedly Chinese nationals coordinating via encrypted platforms such as Telegram, with equipment smuggled in from overseas and local recruits trained remotely.

Authorities now suspect that these Bangkok operations are tied to larger Chinese-led syndicates responsible for illegal call centers and phishing operations across Asia. The syndicates use Cambodian, Thai, and other regional recruits as foot soldiers, lured with modest daily payments while higher-level profits funnel back to overseas bosses.

- In March, a Chinese student in London was sentenced for driving a Honda equipped with an SMS blaster, firing fraudulent texts across neighborhoods.

The pattern is clear: portable SMS blasting is becoming a scalable fraud business model, difficult to detect until victims start reporting fraudulent charges.
Law Enforcement Response
Thai investigators worked with a local telecom operator to trace the origin of the fake texts back to the Suzuki. Even as officers searched the car, the system continued broadcasting real-time phishing messages, underscoring the threat these mobile units pose.
The suspects now face multiple charges, including:

- Possession of unlicensed telecom equipment
- Operating an illegal radio station
- Violations under Thailand’s Computer Crime Act
