FLYDUBAI FLIGHT DIVERTED TO SAUDI ARABIA AFTER COCKPIT ATTACK AS AUTHORITIES INVESTIGATE POSSIBLE ATTEMPT TO CRASH AIRCRAFT

TEL AVIV — A FlyDubai passenger flight traveling from Dubai to Tel Aviv was forced to divert to Saudi Arabia on September 30 after a violent cockpit incident left one pilot injured and triggered an emergency response involving passengers, additional flight crew members, and authorities in several countries.

The flight, identified as FlyDubai FZ1073, was carrying passengers from Dubai to Israel when the emergency developed during the approach toward Israeli airspace. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said one pilot stabbed the other and then apparently attempted to crash the aircraft with everyone on board.

Netanyahu said he spoke with an Israeli passenger who described the aircraft entering a spin and beginning to dive during the incident. According to the prime minister’s account, the passenger managed to enter the cockpit with a crew member and helped neutralize the pilot accused of carrying out the stabbing while that individual was attempting to interfere with the aircraft’s systems.

Additional FlyDubai pilots traveling aboard the aircraft then entered the cockpit and helped regain control of the plane.

The aircraft was diverted to Tabuk Airport in northwestern Saudi Arabia, where it landed safely. The suspected attacking pilot was taken into custody by Saudi authorities for questioning. Israeli officials said all passengers were out of immediate danger following the landing. Saudi authorities also transported injured crew members for medical treatment following the emergency landing.

India’s embassy in Saudi Arabia identified the injured captain as Smit Machchhar and said he was receiving treatment in Tabuk. The alleged attacker, identified as the co-pilot, remained under Saudi investigation. The exact motive behind the cockpit attack remains under investigation.

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz characterized the incident as an attempted terrorist attack, but that assessment has not yet been established through a completed investigation. Authorities are investigating the accused pilot’s motive, whether anyone else was involved, and the full circumstances surrounding the attack. Passenger accounts describe a sudden transition from what had been a routine flight into severe and unexplained aircraft movement.

Ron Levi, who was traveling with his family, said passengers initially believed the aircraft had encountered turbulence. The movement quickly became much more violent, with the plane reportedly pitching, banking, climbing, and descending in ways that passengers realized were not consistent with ordinary turbulence.

Levi described holding hands with his family as the aircraft moved erratically and passengers began hearing shouting from the front of the cabin. People near the cockpit then began moving forward as the situation developed.

Another passenger, Adam Polo, was traveling with his wife and two young children. He described holding his six-year-old son while his wife held their three-year-old daughter as the aircraft moved unpredictably.

Polo said the aircraft eventually stabilized, but passengers remained in the air for an extended period without a complete understanding of what had happened inside the cockpit. He later saw a bloodied individual emerge from the cockpit area. Several passengers closer to the front of the aircraft began relaying information to others in the cabin as the emergency continued.

Passenger Miryam Shira Ohayon described the aircraft as being largely out of control during the most serious part of the incident and said passengers became aware that a violent confrontation had taken place between members of the flight crew.

Accounts from passengers indicate that people near the cockpit helped intervene while qualified off-duty or additional flight personnel aboard the aircraft were called forward to assist.

Netanyahu publicly praised those passengers and crew members, saying their actions prevented a major disaster.

Netanyahu said the suspected attacker was attempting to sabotage the aircraft’s systems when passengers and crew intervened. That allegation remains part of the ongoing investigation and has not yet been independently reconstructed in full by aviation authorities.

The incident presents an unusual aviation-security problem because the alleged threat originated inside the cockpit rather than from a passenger attempting to force entry from the cabin.

Commercial aviation security procedures adopted after the September 11, 2001 attacks place heavy emphasis on preventing unauthorized cockpit access. Those protections are designed primarily to stop outside intrusion and cannot eliminate every risk involving someone who already possesses authorized access to the flight deck. That is likely to become a major part of the investigation.

Investigators will need to determine how the cockpit confrontation began, how the injured pilot responded, what actions were taken to maintain control of the aircraft, and how additional crew members and passengers became involved during the emergency. The investigation is examining the operational and security circumstances of the incident, including how control of the aircraft was affected during the cockpit confrontation.

The safe diversion to Tabuk placed Saudi authorities at the center of the immediate response. The suspected attacker was arrested there, while officials worked to ensure the safety of the remaining crew and passengers. The incident also required coordination involving Israel, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, the airline, and aviation authorities because the flight originated in Dubai, was bound for Tel Aviv, and landed unexpectedly in Saudi territory.

Israeli officials said efforts began immediately to arrange the passengers’ return to Israel. FlyDubai also arranged transportation for those stranded in Saudi Arabia following the diversion. Some passengers expressed reluctance about boarding another aircraft immediately after the ordeal, describing the experience as one of the most frightening moments of their lives.

The passengers were later transported onward and eventually arrived safely in Israel. The incident has already prompted Israeli officials to move toward tighter security screening for pilots operating flights into Israel as the broader investigation continues.

A full aviation investigation could involve cockpit communications, flight recorder data, aircraft control inputs, crew statements, passenger testimony, and available video evidence as authorities reconstruct the sequence of events.

Passenger-shot video from the flight has already surfaced publicly and shows portions of the immediate aftermath inside the aircraft. That footage may provide investigators and the public with additional visual evidence, but it does not by itself establish the motive or complete sequence of events inside the cockpit.

Netanyahu said he instructed Israel’s security services to prepare for additional potential threats while authorities continued assessing the incident.

At this stage, several facts are clear: a violent confrontation occurred in the cockpit, one pilot was injured, the aircraft experienced a serious in-flight emergency, passengers and additional crew members intervened, the flight was diverted to Saudi Arabia, and the aircraft landed safely.

What remains unresolved is the suspected attacker’s motive and the full extent of the actions taken inside the cockpit. The distinction matters because claims of terrorism, hijacking, or a deliberate suicide attack require evidence establishing intent.

Until investigators complete that work, the incident is best described as a severe case of cockpit violence and unlawful interference that created an immediate threat to the safety of a commercial passenger aircraft.

The survival of everyone aboard FZ1073 now places the focus on how control of the aircraft was restored, how the security breach occurred, and whether changes to aviation procedures will follow once authorities determine exactly what happened.
