ZAANDAM, NETHERLANDS — International grocery retailer Ahold Delhaize is responding to a cybersecurity incident that has disrupted online shopping, delivery services, customer support, and other retail operations across parts of the United States and Europe. The company confirmed on October 12, 2026, that it had taken multiple systems offline as a precaution while investigating a security issue within its network.
The Netherlands-based multinational operates major supermarket brands across nine countries, including Food Lion and Stop & Shop in the United States, Albert Heijn in the Netherlands, and Delhaize in Belgium. Although stores have remained open, the interruption of supporting technology has affected services used by customers, employees, and distribution operations.
In an October 13 update, Ahold Delhaize confirmed that its cybersecurity response had caused disruptions across several brands. The company reported that internal teams were working alongside external cybersecurity specialists to investigate the incident, contain potential risks, and restore affected systems safely.
The company also announced that it had begun a controlled restoration of certain systems after assessing the security of its operating environment. The recovery process involves bringing services back online in stages rather than immediately reconnecting every affected application.
The disruptions have been particularly visible in the Netherlands, where Albert Heijn, Etos, and Gall & Gall reported technology problems beginning Sunday afternoon, October 11.
Albert Heijn confirmed that websites, mobile applications, and customer service systems became temporarily unavailable. The retailer also disconnected certain logistics systems as a protective measure, preventing delivery of groceries ordered online.
The interruption affected customers who rely on scheduled deliveries, including individuals unable to travel easily to physical supermarkets. Online grocery services depend on coordinated systems for order processing, inventory, scheduling, payment administration, and distribution. Disabling critical components can interrupt deliveries even when physical stores continue operating.
Dutch customers encountered discrepancies between electronic shelf labels and checkout prices after some displays continued showing promotional prices from the previous week. Albert Heijn confirmed that regular shelf prices had been restored by its October 13 update, although current Bonus promotional prices were not yet appearing on the electronic labels. Applicable discounts continued to be processed at checkout.
The retailer confirmed that its cash registers remained functional and that the current week’s nationally advertised promotions were still valid. Customers were advised to pay attention to pricing differences while the affected systems were being restored.
Digital loyalty and savings programs also experienced problems. Services associated with the My Albert Heijn application and personalized Bonus cards were temporarily unavailable, affecting certain discounts, savings programs, and reward functions.
Albert Heijn stated that customers who missed eligible personalized discounts would receive compensation when the necessary systems became available. The company advised shoppers to retain their receipts to support any adjustments.
In Belgium, Delhaize operates under the same multinational parent company affected by the cybersecurity incident. Ahold Delhaize confirmed that disruptions varied among its retail brands, although its October 12 and October 13 corporate statements did not specify the operational impact on individual Delhaize Belgium services.
The American impact involved brands operating under the same corporate parent, including Food Lion and Stop & Shop. Customers and employees reported interruptions affecting certain online functions, delivery information, and supporting retail services.
The extent of the disruption varied among brands, reflecting differences in their operating systems and the protective measures implemented. Ahold Delhaize has not published a comprehensive list establishing that every store or distribution center experienced the same operational difficulties.
The company emphasized that its supermarkets across Europe and the United States remained open and continued serving customers. The incident therefore affected supporting digital and administrative services without causing a complete shutdown of its physical retail network.
The disruption illustrates the dependence of modern grocery operations on interconnected information systems. Retailers use centralized technology to coordinate supply chains, maintain inventory records, manage pricing, process online orders, and communicate with distribution facilities.
When a cybersecurity incident requires protective system shutdowns, the resulting interruption can extend across multiple business functions without an attacker directly compromising each individual application.
Taking systems offline can help restrict unauthorized access, limit potential movement through connected infrastructure, and preserve the integrity of unaffected technology. Such measures can impose short-term operational costs while reducing the risk of further damage.
Ahold Delhaize has not publicly identified the initial entry point, the specific security weakness involved, or the identity of any potential threat actor. The company has also not attributed the incident to ransomware or confirmed that attackers encrypted its systems.
On October 13, the retailer reported that its investigation had found no evidence at that point that customer or employee data had been taken. The statement reflects the company’s findings during an ongoing investigation rather than a declaration that every aspect of the incident had been conclusively resolved.
That information is important because operational disruption and data theft are separate potential consequences of a cybersecurity incident. A company may temporarily disconnect systems to protect its infrastructure without experiencing a confirmed theft of personal records.
The retailer stated that it was engaging with appropriate authorities and other relevant parties while evaluating the incident. It also explained that certain technical details were being withheld to avoid compromising security measures or interfering with the investigation.
The latest disruption follows a separate major cybersecurity incident affecting Ahold Delhaize in November 2024. That earlier attack interrupted operations at several American grocery businesses and subsequently resulted in the disclosure of personal information belonging to more than 2.2 million individuals.
The 2024 breach demonstrated the potential consequences of an intrusion involving a large retail organization with extensive distribution and employment networks. The newly announced incident has not been established as connected to the earlier attack, and the company has not confirmed comparable data exposure in October 2026.
The current response highlights the operational challenges facing multinational retailers that maintain shared corporate technology while operating different supermarket brands across national boundaries.
Cybersecurity containment decisions can affect ordering, customer communications, inventory management, loyalty systems, and distribution operations. Restoring these functions requires confirming that connected systems can safely resume service without creating additional security risks.
For customers, the immediate consequences have involved delivery interruptions, unavailable digital services, and difficulties accessing routine shopping functions. Retailers must address these disruptions while protecting payment processing, customer information, and systems necessary for daily store operations.
Ahold Delhaize has apologized for the inconvenience and confirmed that its teams are working to restore affected services. The company has not announced a universal restoration deadline, with individual brands responsible for communicating developments relevant to their customers.
The October 2026 cybersecurity incident demonstrates how precautionary shutdowns within a major retail network can affect grocery services across multiple countries while physical stores remain operational. Ahold Delhaize has begun restoring selected systems and continues investigating the security issue, with its latest official update reporting no evidence of customer or employee data theft.
